  2. What is one key aspect of being discipled that has made it so significant for you?

  3. Who are you informally discipling or influencing in your life right now, and what does that process look like with that person?

Biblical Discipleship is an intentional, relational process where we encounter God together and experience the ministry of His Holy Spirit in order to – • grow in a more intimate relationship with God, • reinforce Biblical truth, • become more like Christin our character, values, beliefs and actions, • remove the obstacles in our relationships with God and others.

  5. Premise #1 - We are all broken in some areas of our lives and searching for wholeness. • brokenness in all areas of life – with God, others, and creation. • We’re all in this together! • disciple others with God’s heart, which reflects mercy, understanding, grace and love.

  6. We know that people often search for wholeness by looking for significance, value and love from sources that cannot satisfy them, which leaves them broken and still searching.

  7. Premise #2 - Hiding is a fallen human reaction. We have a tendency to try to hide our brokenness and blame our failures on others.

  8. “The woman was convinced. The fruit looked so fresh and delicious, and it would make her so wise! So she ate some of the fruit.She also gave some to her husband, who was with her. Then he ate it, too. At that moment, their eyes were opened, and they suddenly felt shame at their nakedness. So they strung fig leaves together around their hips to cover themselves.”

  9. “Toward evening they heard the Lord God walking about in the garden, so they hid themselves among the trees. The Lord God called to Adam, ‘Where are you?’ He replied, ‘I heard you, so I hid. I wasafraid because I was naked.’ ‘Who told you that you were naked?’ the Lord God asked. ‘Have you eaten the fruit I commanded you not to eat?’ ‘Yes,’ Adam admitted, ‘but it was the woman you gave me who brought me the fruit, and I ate it.’ (blame) Then the Lord God asked the woman, ‘How could you do such a thing?’ ‘The serpent tricked me,’ she replied. ‘That’s why I ate it.’” (blame) Genesis 3:6-13 (NLT)

  10. Premise #2 - Hiding is a fallen human reaction. We have a tendency to try and hide our brokenness and blame our failures on others. • (vs.7) shame • (vs.8) hiding • (vs.10) Adam hid - afraid • (vs.12) Adam blamed Eve • (vs.13) Eve blamed Satan

  11. In life, we all make mistakes and often experience shame, guilt, fear, and failure. So we commonly try to hide, wear masks, condemn, reject, or blame others in order to protect ourselves.

  12. Premise #3 - God is at work in all of us. We are looking for how we can cooperate with Him as we disciple others. • God began the good work and He will complete it. • God gives you the desire to obey Him and the power to do what pleases Him. • so everyone sees the power is from God and not us.

  13. We often lose sight of where God is at work, and we try to do the work for Him. We are much more successful when we join God where He is working. By doing this, He receives the glory due His name.

  14. Premise #4 - We are in a process, either moving toward the Lord or away from Him. As disciplers, we want to affirm moving toward Him.

As disciplers, we want to affirm moving toward Him. • (vs.9) keep growing in the knowledge and understanding of the Lord. • (vs.10) understand what really matters - pure and blameless lives until Christ returns. • (vs.11) bring praise and glory to God

  16. God loves and accepts us, even when we are moving away from Him. We can do the same with others. We can walk with them, pray with them, and encourage them to move toward God and follow Him.

  17. “Just as a would-be disciple today begins a relationship with Jesus with a host of half-truths, misguided thoughts, and lies, so did the Twelve. These interactions are intended to unmask and confront those attitudes and values that are not in line with Jesus’ kingdom perspective. For the disciples these were gut-check times, when they had to assess the cost and commitment necessary to identify with Jesus. They had their cherished assumptions and worldviews challenged at the core.” Greg Ogden Transforming Discipleship
