2. FAUVISM- HENRY MATISSE December 31, 1869 - November 3, 1954 Henry Matisse was the leader of the Fauvism movement in Paris. Because this new style of art was so WILD, UNTAMED, and SHOCKING, artists that painted this way were called “LES FAUVES” which means… “WILD BEAST” in the French language. Fauvism was about creating a world of feeling, form, and spirit using brilliant, splashy colors. Matisse was probably the greatest colorist of the twentieth century. He loved simple contrasting colors and believed they could tell stories. For Example, Matisse often used the following color key: BLUE=truth or heaven ORANGE=love or gentleness RED=excitement or fire GREEN=growth or change

4. Sorrows of the Kings 1952 PAPER CUT OUTS- It was the invention of the paper cut-out that led to some of his most famous pieces of artwork. He began to use this cut-out style around the year 1947. He loved to use patterns and patterns within patterns.

7. CUBISM- A twentieth-century art movement that begun in the 1900’s, in which subject matter is broken up or separated into cubes and other geometric shapes. These artists rejected the use of proportion and emphasized the flatness of the painted subject. Subjects are sometimes shown from several viewpoints at the same time. A noted artist is …..

8. PABLO PICASSO October 25, 1881 – April 8, 1973 Pablo Picasso is considered one of the most famous Influential artists of the 20th century. Picasso grew up in Spain and later went to school and lived in Paris, France. As a child he showed incredible artistic talent and was considered a child prodigy. By the time Picasso was 19 years old he was a fully trained professional painter. In Paris he lived very poor, simple life while painting over 200 works of art. These paintings showed his sadness over what he saw and felt about the poor lives around him. This was his blue period (1900-1904) and these paintings on the themes of loneliness and despair. He used primarily the color blue to communicate these themes. Later, he moved to a style of painting that stressed warmer colors and moods called the Rose Period. These paintings were of clowns and performers at the circus. They were much happier than those from the Blue Period. Self-Portrait (BLUE PERIOD) Acrobat and Harlequin (ROSE PERIOD) NEXT, he began to paint pictures that looked more like puzzles with pieces all out of order. This style of painting was called cubism. Cubist artists tried to create a new way of seeing things in art. Henry Matisse was also a cubist artist and both, Picasso and Matisse where good friends.

9. Picasso tried to show the models he painted from all sides at once, not just from one normal view. He might show a woman with her eyes facing the right but her nose turned to the left. Her basic body shape would be changed into cubes or square shapes facing various directions at once. She might be put together like a jigsaw puzzle or a broken mirror. 12. POP ARTIST ANDY WARHOL Andy Warhol was famous for his paintings and photo Silk-screening, a type of printmaking. This art work became known as POP Art. He became world famous because of his contributions to the POP Art style. Andy Warhol’s artwork made people take a look around them and think about what really was important and what wasn’t in their lives. Born:August 6, 1928 (Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania) Died:February 22, 1987 (New York City, New York)

13. WHAT IS POP ART?????? Pop Art - An art movement and style that had its origins in England in the 1950s and made its way to the United States during the 1960s. Pop artists have focused attention upon familiar images of the popular culture such as billboards, comic strips, magazine advertisements, and supermarket products.   POP ART comes from the word “POPULAR”. Pop art is art about what is popular at the time. When people first started seeing POP art many of them where shocked, and couldn’t believe serious artists like Andy Warhol would make art of such ordinary objects. He was simply creating art about things that were important or familiar in everyday life.

14. Warhol’s paintings and screen prints often started with a photograph. Many of these paintings and prints show repeated images colored in different ways. They are usually brightly colored and have simple strong shapes that really stand out. 10 Marilyns 1967 Marylin Monroe Warhol loved to paint images of famous people and celebrities.
