  4. I: Background and context The Digital Curation Centre’s engagement with Data Management Plans (DMPs) began in 2007 with the recommendations of Liz Lyon’s (DCC Bath) ‘Dealing With Data’ consultancy report, notably... REC 9. Each funded research project should submit a structured Data Management Plan for peer-review as an integral part of the application for funding. (1, 2) http://www.ukoln.ac.uk/ukoln/staff/e.j.lyon/publications.html#2007-06-19

  5. II: Analysis of data-related policies In early 2009, we conducted an analysis of the major UK research funders’ data-related policies... Major findings: • Not all funders have data policies • Some have different policies for different programs • Requirements are expressed in different ways • In a word, they’re diverse... http://www.dcc.ac.uk/resources/policy-and-legal/overview-funders-data-policies

  6. III: Checklist for a Data Management Plan At the same time in 2009, we pulled together a list of all the funders’ requirements, gathered them into thematic groups, and supplemented this list with our own expertise... This became the first ‘Data Management Plan Content Checklist’ (or ‘Checklist v1.0’) – 51 questions/headings. (Post-consultation, v2.0 had 115 questions/headings.)

  7. III: Checklist for a Data Management Plan We then mapped our Checklist questions to each funder’s data-related requirements...

  10. IV: DMP Online v1.0 DMP Online v1.0 (soft launch April 2010) is based on Checklist v2.0 (January 2010), and enables users to...

  11. IV: DMP Online v1.0 i) Create, store and update Data Management Plans at the application and in-project stages

  12. IV: DMP Online v1.0 ii) Meet funders’ specific data-related requirements (Disclaimer: mappings are not yet endorsed by funders...)

  13. IV: DMP Online v1.0 iii) Get guidance on best practice and helpful contacts

  14. IV: DMP Online v1.0 iv) Customise and export DMPs in PDF or HTML format

  15. V: Updating Following the soft launch and a couple of demonstrations, we consulted with users of the online tool. They were generally positive about the tool itself, but many had comments on the underlying Checklist (v2.0). So in Summer 2010 we gave the Checklist a more thorough review, and at the same time DMP Online got a bit of a polish. Which brings us up to the present day...

  17. VI: State of play On 20 October 2010, 112 registered users had created 192 Data Management Plans. (26 US emails, 5 Australians, 2 Dutch, 1 Canadian, several non-geospecific addresses...) DMP Checklist v3.0 and DMP Online v2.0 will shortly be released. (I’m currently making minor adjustments to the Checklist as a result of the new mapping exercise, and also testing the new system; both systems will remain online concurrently until we eventually merge them.) A couple of recent and forthcoming publications are relevant to this event...

  22. VI: State of play Recommendations in the recent MESSAGE case study report: “That training and guidance continue to be developed with sensitivity to the needs and perceptions of researchers, paying particular attention to issues of appraisal and selection which appear currently to be overlooked.” “That funding bodies provide increased support to grant-holders and applicants in the production of data management plans and consortium agreements, and place more value on their production.” - Donnelly (2010) ‘Ways of Looking at Data: MESSAGE (Mobile Environmental Sensor Systems Across a Grid Environment)’, DCC
