Access Code: 6339392 Designed for two different audiences, we offer
Personal Enrichment workshops for the consumer audience, which includes our 1H and 3H workshops
Ten 1-hour workshops – fun, easy classes that cover topics adult learners are interested in
Four 3-hour workshops – classes that build computer confidence and teach skills desired by many adult learners
And for the business and home PC users, which includes Workforce Development programs, we offer
our 12-hour workshop – Intro to Windows 7 - where PC users become familiar and efficient with their computer’s operating system
It is important to point out that some workforce development programs have offered our 3H workshops to help remove intimidation and build computer confidence as well as offering our IW7 workshop
Libraries and community training centers have also expressed interest in offering our 1H workshops to their staff to improve confidence and efficiency with Windows 7 OS

12. Research on adult audience
Disconnect between what adults want to learn and what is available
Intro computer classes traditionally teach topics too dry for the adult audience, or teach with too much jargon
Learning Style; forget the jargon, build confidence, lifestyle approach My PC Program Overview My PC Series Program History Conference Call: 866-740-1260
Access Code: 6339392 The My PC Program came out of the consumer audience team at Microsoft, which is a team that looks at the changing needs of the audience they are focusing on and what that audience wants to see in the world of technology.
The team did a lot of research around the baby boomer segment in regards to how they interact with and how they learn technology.
Our program has since evolved beyond the baby boomer demographic and now includes all less tech savvy adult learners, but our initial research focused specifically on the baby boomer/empty nester audience.
We found that the majority of people in their 50’s and 60’s are still working full time jobs and over 80% use a computer daily.
Research confirmed what we already knew. Baby boomers enjoy learning, are interested in but apprehensive of technology, enjoy traveling and are passionate about staying in touch with family and friends.
So, it was quite natural to partner with Holland America Cruise Lines for our first pilot.

This pilot was overwhelmingly successful,
and
Holland America Cruise Lines currently offers ten 1-hour workshops on 16 of their cruise ships, often with standing room only.

1 year pilot with Holland America
2 year pilot in community colleges
Adapted from the successful Digital Workshops approach
Designed for adults learners Conference Call: 866-740-1260
Access Code: 6339392 Microsoft took our experience and momentum from the research and Holland America partnership to create the My PC Series
We began a pilot in the community college space with five community colleges in the Seattle area
We offered three 2-3 hour workshops focused on baby boomers and empty nesters
And from that pilot, we launched a nationwide campaign targeting community colleges and continuing education programs, still with a target audience of older adult learners.
Microsoft is now looking to build relationships with public libraries, community and corporate learning centers and workforce development programs as a channel to offer a less technical, more lifestyle approach to teaching PC topics – geared towards the consumer market and specifically the adult learner.

15. There is a disconnect between what adultswant to learn and what is available Adult Learning Experience Conference Call: 866-740-1260
Access Code: 6339392 Kyla: There is a great deal of talk in the library and nonprofit community about making technology training accessible to people with all levels of knowledge. How does My PC work to reflect this need?
The adult learning experience:
What we are hearing from our customers, is that there is a real disconnect between what adults want to learn and what they find available:
In talking with consumers this list is common for the types of topics they want to learn about (see list)

However, when we sat in classes to see what the consumer experience was, here is what we found as common topics in many “intro PC” classes: (see list)
Most students taking introductory computer classes are age 45-75 home users, not aspiring IT pros.
Intro classes traditionally teach topics too dry for this audience, or teach with too much jargon
The training industry as a whole has focused on IT Pros and helping train an entire industry of support folks; consumers have really gotten left behind; as most computer classes are very technically focused;
This is something that Microsoft has really contributed to and we have to take some responsibility for…
Microsoft has focused on providing training for the IT Pro, the Developer, and the Office workers of the world – not consumers
Many of you probably use MS Press or Element K training material so you know what I mean here
MS is a geeky place and we were steeped in our geekdom
We recognize that there are some schools and training facilities that are meeting the needs of this audience, we do not want to paint everyone with the same broad brush. Rather we are trying to provide content through this program that is designed to address both the audience and the technology for schools and training facilities wanting to better serve the adult audienceThere is a great deal of talk in the library and nonprofit community about making technology training accessible to people with all levels of knowledge. 17. Adult Learner Insights
Conference Call: 866-740-1260
Access Code: 6339392 What did we learn from all of this research? The next two slides are a summary of what we learned:
Learning Style:
We know that adults have a different Learning Style than the younger audiences when it comes to the digital world
Forget the jargon
Speak in the language they speak in; and provide them with materials that speaks in the consumer voice that’s accessible to them
They’re not there to understand the inner workings of the computer.
They really are turned off by “geek speak”, we think key topics can be taught without ever using techy jargon.
Build confidence
Older adults are wary of making mistakes with technology. (trained at work to use an application – but afraid to use the home computer)
They didn’t grow up with technology; and they learn differently from kids who’ve grown up with a mouse in their hands
Lots of patience – 1:1 teaching and a tell-show-do teaching style
Lifestyle approach
Lots of course catalogs focus on the Office application based classes – Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc;
This is a technology approach – how to use specific applications
Through the My PC Series we wanted to experiment with benefit driven classes that focuses more on their lifestyle needs – and not about the technology.
Embracing a fun approach to teaching PCs, even when teaching job-related skills. What did we learn from all of this research? The next two slides are a summary of what we learned:

This slide shows where the My PC Courses fit into the traditional computer training space
Our 1H and 3H workshops fill a need in the personal enrichment area and are a fun, unintimidating introduction for students with limited PC skill
Our 12H Introduction to Windows 7 workshop (the blue segment on this slide) is a hands-on, full length course that has some topical overlap with our My PC Getting Started course (like snap, shake, & peek), but it goes much deeper. Students become familiar with their computers before moving on to more specialized training, such as Word, Excel or Adobe applications.
