    1. SKILL BUILDER SERIES: TURNS AROUND A POINT ANNOYING MANEUVER… INVALUABLE LESSONS

    3. THE BASICS FIND A NICE 4-WAY ROAD INTERSECTION NOT TOO CLOSE TO POPULATION KNOW YOUR “INTO THE WIND” EMERGENCY LANDING SPOT FIND AN ALTITUDE BETWEEN 600’ & 1,000’ AGL KNOW WHAT DIRECTION THE WIND IS COMING FROM DO A FLOW CHECK AND A COUPLE OF CLEARING TURNS

    4. THE WHOLE IDEA DIVISION OF ATTENTION FLYING A COMPLEX GROUND TRACK, COMPENSATING FOR WIND BY CHANGING BANK ANGLES COORDINATED CONTROL OF CHANGING BANK ANGLES PERFECT ATTITUDE CONTROL DESPITE CHANGING BANK ANGLES

    5. WHERE COULD WE POSSIBLY USE THESE SKILLS?

    7. WHY? POSITIVE AIRCRAFT CONTROL DURING CRITICAL PHASES OF FLIGHT WHEN ATTENTION IS DIVIDED ENHANCING BASIC CONTROL THROUGH MUSCLE MEMORY, “SEAT OF THE PANTS” FEEL, SOUNDS, & PERIPHERAL VISION PERFECTING THAT BASE TO FINAL TURN, IN ALL WIND CONDITIONS DEVELOPMENT OF SITUATIONAL AWARENESS WHEN CLOSE TO THE GROUND

    8. FIND A GOOD POINT TO HARRASS 4-WAY ROAD INTERSECTIONS ALLOW FOR INTERMEDIATE CHECKPOINTS AROUND THE CIRCLE YOU WILL FLY CHECKPOINTS SHOULD PROVIDE Ľ MILE SPACING FROM YOUR MAIN POINT COVER UP THE ENTIRE FLIGHT INSTRUMENT PANEL…TRUST ME, THIS WILL DRAMATICALLY IMPROVE YOUR RESULTS

    10. THE ENTRY GIVE YOURSELF SOME ROOM (1-2 MILES) UPWIND OF YOUR MAIN POINT PRIOR TO ENTERING ENTER DOWNWIND OVER YOUR FIRST CHECKPOINT SET YOUR POWER FOR SOMETHING AROUND 80-100KIAS STABILIZE AT THE ALTITUDE YOU INTEND TO MAINTAIN

    12. THE FIRST TURN ROLL STRAIGHT INTO YOUR STEEPEST BANK ANGLE OF THE MANEUVER, DON’T GET TOO CUTE DEPENDING ON YOUR IDEAL CIRCLE’S RADIUS, & YOUR GROUND SPEED YOUR SHOULD BE BETWEEN 15° & 40° OF BANK DON’T FORGET THE RUDDER & BACK PRESSURE

    14. MAINTAINING COORDINATION REMEMBER, ANYTIME YOU DEFLECT THE AILERONS, YOU MUST DEFLECT THE RUDDER IN THE SAME DIRECTION ROLLING IN, OR ROLLING OUT YOUR BRAIN WILL TELL YOU TO SLOW THINGS DOWN A BIT, THIS WILL LEAD TO A SLIPPING TURN (OUTSIDE RUDDER)…DON’T DO THIS!!!

    15. ROUNDING THE DOWNWIND SIDE THINK AHEAD BEGIN TO REDUCE THE BANK, EVEN IF YOU DON’T THINK YOU NEED TO…TRUST ME, YOU DO

    17. HOLDING YOUR ALTITUDE DESPITE HOW YOU STRESSED OUT ABOUT YOUR CHECKRIDE, THIS IS NOT THE MAIN DRIVE OF THE MANEUVER THE POINT OF ALTITUDE CONTROL IN THIS MANEUVER, IS TO PROMOTE & PERFECT FUNDAMENTAL CONTROL SIGHT (PERIPHERAL) OF THE NOSE & HORIZON LINE SOUND OF THE ENGINE & AIRFLOW OVER THE COCKPIT FEEL OR YOUR BUTT IN THE SEAT…HEAVIER THAN NORMAL (NO OFFENSE)

    18. MAINTAINING ALTITUDE CONT. REMEMBER, CHANGING BANK ANGLES REQUIRE CHANGING AMOUNTS OF BACK PRESSURE UNDERSTAND THE EFFECT OF RUDDER INPUTS AS THEY WILL LIKELY CHANGE BANK ANGLE & BACK PRESSURE REQUIREMENTS

    19. GETTING UPWIND INTO A BIG HEADWIND, WE’RE TALKING 1° TO 5° OF BANK…NO KIDDING DON’T ROLL WINGS LEVEL, THAT’S A FAILURE DON’T CHEAT WITH OUTSIDE RUDDER LOW BANK MEANS LITTLE BACK PRESSURE

    21. SITUATIONAL AWARENESS ALWAYS, ALWAYS KNOW WHERE THE WIND IS & THIS MANEUVER IS MADE MUCH EASIER TRANSFER THIS SKILL & AWARENESS INTO THE TRAFFIC PATTERN, OR ENROUTE AS YOU PONDER YOUR OPTIONS IN THE EVENT OF AN ENGINE FAILURE TAILWHEEL PILOT? YOU GOTTA BE GOOD AT THIS JUST TO TAXI THE STUPID THING!

    23. OVER THE TOP: THE UPWIND SIDE YEHAW! TIME TO HAVE FUN AGAIN INCREASE THE BANK, RUDDER, & BACK PRESSURE AS YOU COMPENSATE FOR THE DIMINISHING TAILWIND BECOMING A HEADWIND

    25. THE EXIT CONFIDENTLY ROLLTHE WINGS LEVEL REMEMBER TO USE THE RUDDER TO ENFORCE COORDINATION ALSO, RELEASE ALL OF THAT BACK PRESSURE YOU HAD IN THERE TO KEEP FROM DESCENDING IN ORDER TO AVOID A 200’ CLIMB AT THE END OF THE TURN

    27. TRAINING & PRACTICE COVER UP THE FLIGHT INSTRUMENT PANEL TAKE YOUR MOST CRITICIZING PILOT FRIEND, SPOUSE, OR ANY ANNOYING CFI WILL DO IN A PINCH TRY A FEW, EMPHASIZING ATTITUDE CONTROL, FEELING THE WIND, & MAINTAINING COORDINATION REINTRODUCE THE INSTRUMENTS AND SEE HOW GOOD YOU ARE
