Committee Chair/ Leadership Responsibilities • Identify Gaps in Current process • Political approaches. • Solution = co chairs – acceptance in industry that committee not run by political agenda • Term limits – specific. • Solution = succession planning; no exclusion from serving again • Limited attendance/difficulties attending every meeting makes for difficulty to fill leadership positions. • Solution = rotating leadership to fill gap • Budget planning

Committee Chair/ Leadership Responsibilities • Identify Gaps in Current process • Change of leadership in middle of process • Solution = ensure continuity with Chair/Vice Chair/Secretary • Need flexibility in process • SAE provide structure in the process in succession planning • Solid support from management – long term budget support • Solution = add to staff report

Ballot Process • Roadblocks Identified • Not being able to resolve a comment or disapproval • An entity who does not participate decides to later comment, halting the process. • Set criteria to be a voting member • Trying to meeting voting percentage. • Perhaps include a report that shows balloting percentage. This may help clear roster. • If they don’t participate, they loose voting privileges.

Ballot Process • The process is not descriptive when it comes to approval with comments. • Ability to extract text from ballot comments. • Balloting (for comment) document to other committees. • Confusion in direction for “comment only” ballot • Ability to retain archived info to use for future revisions. • Supporting documentation from those who have retired. Can use SAE disclaimers.

Ballot Process • Some people are trying to match the formatting and holding up the process-they are spending too much time on formatting issues. • Some comments do not apply to spec. • Confusion between editorial or technical. Who makes that decision? Does the sponsor resolve? • Definitions of I or T comments on each ballots.

Volunteerism • Recruiting • Protect company interest • To learn competitors business • To get large program updates • To identify and bring in key technical people • To track new requirements • Committee leadership direct contact • Bi-yearly review of “active” members (both suppliers & OEM’s • Gap identification • SAE help needed:

Volunteerism • Recruiting • Defined standard business case that can be used to convince companies to send company experts – need SAE help • Invite team to participate in what will become a regulation • Referrals from other members –cold calls do not work well • Notify local companies of pending SAE meetings in their area • Committee leadership direct contact • Identify gaps in supplier base or OEM base

  18. Employer Return on Investment (ROI) • Why is ROI important/what does it do for you? • To justify to management why we should be involved/active on committees. • Benefits company • To stay in business • Allows continued participation

Employer Return on Investment (ROI) • Why is ROI important/what does it do for you? • The company likes to use industry standards rather than company standards. • It costs less to use industry standards. • Justifies investment (R&D) in specs • To keep bean counters busy • Accountability issue • It’s not all about money, it’s about safety.

Employer Return on Investment (ROI) • What would provide you with ROI? • Testimonials from others with experiences that document cost savings • Newsletter, website, ROI info page • Verify that changes made to documents have benefited industry somehow • Website allows folks to post upload info and feedback • People with experience in the stories and users post may this. • Use survey to get feedback • Can group into topics/categories and list active specifications with usage and statistics.

Employer Return on Investment (ROI) • What would provide you with ROI? • Promotion of standards documents • Asking what is needed from experts. • Make everyone aware that there are existing standards. • Companies don’t know what standards already exist. • Need to market SAE our standards. • Catalog the documents. • “Google deicing facilities and the first thing that should show up is our standards” • Improve investment of time • Time spent in standards activities • How to be more productive, improve workload, fixing roadblocks

Emerging Technologies • Replacement of oil/derived products • The current paradigm for “Standards” (and other documents) is a paper handout-tech data is moving to interactive electronic multimedia entities: text+video+photos+animation, etc. • Environmental considerations (new stds) • CAD replacement for Hydraulic Metal seals
