Digital Solar Heat 100% Carbon Offset “Free Heat For Life” using Massive Inter-Seasonal Thermal Storage
DSH History 2002 begin design of solar heating overseas 2005 first home installed 2007 toured by press and gov. 2010 patented 2015 updated to drainback 2016 patented (Can) 2017 complete conversion to function in Canadian Winters 2018 launch Cdn version The 3 type variations of the DSH design based on location
Alt. Green HEAT Solutions Alternate Heating Solutions • ‘Ground Sourced’ Heat pump, • Incorrectly known as Geothermal • Requires significant ongoing OpEx Alternatively Green Systems: • Solar Thermal • Solar PV (Photovoltaic) • Wind Turbines • Micro-Hydro Typical Ground sourced Heat Pump system
The DSH Solution DSH Integrated Residential Solution • Direct slab radiant heat • Optional high temp appliances • Geo-storage in & Out • Interseasonal Storage • 100% Carbon offset • Pool/Spa heat • Domestic Hot Water • Off Grid Capable Typical DSH System
The DSH Solution DSH Integrated Commercial Solution • Direct slab radiant heat typical, Condensing Boiler backup • Optional high temp Pre-heat , and Radiator thermal distribution • Hot Water & Snow Melt • Every design is locally optimised • Massive Interseasonal Storage allows optimal winter solar array • Opt Commercial digital controller for large systems • Possible Retrofit capability especially with existing hydronic heating Typical DSH System
DSH Equipment Quality Equipment, designed to last • Custom Controller: Low energy, smart phone access, off grid capable • DC Pumps: Efficient Digitally controlled, floating rotor with no shaft seals • Pump Station: Stainless Steel box with doors, Insulated, lockable • Solar Panels: EvT panels with excellent low temperature performance • PE-EX: Oxygen proof Pex pipes for heating and storage. • Design: Every design is custom engineered for each site, R value, and client • Isolated hydronic design for Solar-Heat distribution and Open flame heat
How is DSH Different? • First packaged Solar Heating system to take solar heat and convert it to an active, in floor, radiant heating system combined with Solar Hot Water and Low Cost Interseasonal Storage. • The mass-storage allows the solar panel design to be optimized for winter with no worries about summer overheat. • Stores summer valuable heat for use in dark times or winter instead of wasting it. • Solar Panels that work well even down to -30c • backup typical hydronic boilers, heat pumps & demand boilers • Optional open flame (log) boiler support
How is DSH Different? • First packaged Solar Heating system with massive thermal low-caloric storage (30-70c). • High temperature (75c) Opt. storage for: • Pools & Spas: Warm • Snow Melt: Safety • Laundry: Hotels, Hospitals, • Car washes etc. • Commercial Pre-heating
Why Low Caloric Heat? Low Caloric Radiant Heat allows: • Typical max slab temp is 29.5c, low caloric. This type of system uses large volume, low caloric heat • Simple fluid tempering mix to prevent slab overheating • Lower temps greatly reduce parasitic heat losses • Improved overall efficiency using slab thermal mass
How is DSH Different? Expected 2018 release of a new custom Digital Controller that offers: • Ease of Use with on-screen prompts • Wireless, Bluetooth capability • Online monitoring or adjustment • Full colour display • 24V DC Controller with • 24VDC digital controlled V/S pumps • Off Grid capability from day one LCD Diagram
How is DSH Different? WHY DIGITAL? A custom, intuitive, digital controller, designed specifically for the complex task of managing a solar heating and storage system: Q2 2018: • Wireless/Blue tooth access • Histograms and Database • Remote Access • >15 Thermal sensors • 24VDC Variable Speed, long Life Pumps • Manage Drainback system • Real Time Clock W/Backup • >7 24 outputs • Trigger B/U heat & HW • Commercial option controller • Carbon offset + cumulative
Carbon & GHG Impact Alberta Example: Potential Provincial Carbon Offset Assumption: • All new Alberta Construction • Ongoing energy cost increases • Compound cumulative Carbon offset capability
Commercial Carbon GHG Impact ~ Canada Canada Potential • Carbon Offset • Assumption: • All new Canadian Commercial construction • To DSH Specs
The Patented DSHHeating System • Roof mounted solar collectors absorb solar energy, efficient even in winter, using vacuum solar tubes. This heats a transfer fluid. • The fluid directly heats pipes in the Floor Slab, Or: • If the room temperature is satisfied, or slab thermal limit is reached, it travels to the Insulated heat core storage system under the slab. Safety limit = core cooling. • When heat is needed and no solar is available (i.e. at night) the fluid is circulated from core to slab.
Residential comparison • A typical heating furnace generates: • Noise • Draft • Dust & bacteria circulation • Heat wall scrubbing • Space robbing installation • A typical DSH Mechanical system: • No Noise, Drafts, circulation • Luxury radiant floor heat • Stratified heating in prime location • No heat wall scrubbing • Space enhancing installation • Opt: zoned heating on Thermostats
How it works: ResideNtial Even in the dead of winter, if the sun is out, the evacuated tube solar panels still function, and add direct heat to a home or facility. Solar heated fluid is pumped direct to the slab, adding heat to the concrete thermal mass which retains the heat over long periods. Insulation on all sides limits leakage to the home or office. Everything is controlled by a custom digital controller.
How it works: Once the room is up to temp or the slab limit has been reached, the system transfers all excess energy to the thermal mass heat core storage. Solar heated fluid is pumped directly to the massive heat core, & over time, especially in summer, the core temperature at the top rises and stabilises based on demand, thermal transfer and insolation. In N America the bottom is also insulated to fully contain the stored heat energy.
How it works: • When no solar heat is available, heat can be drawn from the heat core to the slab using the same piping already in place. Fluid heated in the core is pumped up to the slab, heating it. This is especially useful on bright solar days with cold nights as peak heat at the top of the core has had little time to escape and can be readily extracted.
Options • Heat Pump or other Boiler backup heating • Solar PV power – Off Grid • Wetback (wood) Open Flame fireplace boiler • Spa & Pool integration • Snow/Ice melting • Process commercial heat • Coming soon: Solar A/C Typical Solar Pool system
Pump Station The Stainless Steel DSH Residential Pump station, with manifolds & Legacy controller
What is important? Insolation value for the local area This is a measure of solar radiation energy received on a given surface area in a given time. • Performance is affected by: • Insolation & Sun Angle • Temperature Extremes & Weather • Building efficiency – heat loss • Pollution • Roof or collector real estate • Building Thermal Demand • Hot water demand
GHG OFFSET & Results Every KWt of energy injected into a structure will offset 100% of the equivalent GHG (Greenhouse Gas) emissions for that site. SAVINGS: Every year, new systems compound the GHG savings in perpetuity Expected heating energy offset projections: 50% to 100% This chart is based on mixed variables
CANADIAN Re-ENGINEERING • A redesign for the harsher Cdn. climate • Added focus: Commercial Systems • Solar EvT Panels with excellent performance in winter even at -30c • Drainback system for possible power outages during full insolation • Digital Controller Canadian Insolation
SYSTEM Life Expectancy The life expectancy of this system is expected to reach beyond 30 years with only nominal servicing. Servicing to include system 5yr flushes, detritus flush, solar panel tubes to be cleaned and general performance testing. Even hot areas in deserts require heat as homes suffer from night time thermal shock where temperature can drop from +40c to <0c.
