  2. Trade . U. S. exports about 10% of GDP (roughly 25% to Canada). . Canada exports about 40% of GDP (roughly 80% U. S.). . 37 states list Canada as their largest export market. . Canada is #1 source of electricity, natural gas, and #2 source of coal for the U. S.

  3. Trade . Canada supplies close to 100% of U. S. electricity imports to: NE U. S. the Upper Midwest, Pacific NW, and California. . Canada has been U. S. #1 trading partner since since 1946. . NAFTA has doubled trade.

  4. 2010 Winter Olympics . Construction is a challenge. . Facilities will be built by 2008 (build early in order to save expenses). . Natives (Four Nations) involved. . Sustainability is significant for the first time (aboriginal, environment footprint, and social inclusion).

  5. Olympics . Symbol for the Olympics is the Inuit symbol: welcome (Inuksuk). . Plans to include the youth of Vancouver. . Affordable tickets for the inner city. . Develop businesses for workers of inner city (recycling, etc). . Corporate sponsors: GM, McDonalds, GE, and Coca Cola.

  6. Olympics . Plans to showcase cultural activities. . Plans for the homeless: mental ill will be placed in facilities, drug/alcohol will be placed in rehab. facilities, and the unemployed will be given clean-up jobs. . Border crossing is an issue to be solved. . Canada sees the Olympics as an opportunity to bring people together (vancouver2010.com).

  7. Olympics . Four Host First Nations. . Games are being held where they live (for the first time in Olympic history, First Nations are involved). . Tewanee Joseph is the speaker for the Four Nations. . Lesson plans will be on line (they have their own websites).

  8. Inuit (Nunavut) . Music (Susan Aglutark). . Inuit languages (Inuktitut). . Northwest Passage is melting – question who owns it in the future? . On Devon Island (uninhabited) an inukshuk was built for each of the Columbia astronauts. . Nunavut is above the tree line.

  9. Inuits . Four groups/regions of Inuits. . Language and culture is being lost with their children. . This area is the “canary in the mine.”

  10. Immigration . Black Canadians is a neglected area of teaching in Canada. . Prime Minister Trudeau wanted a multicultural society. . During 1981 – 1990 many immigrants from Hong Kong, India, China, Philippines, and Vietnam.

  11. Immigration . Late 1990’s immigration from Kosovo. . Census is done every 5 years. . Mobile population in the west and in the cities. . Five years to become a citizen, necessary to pass a test on Canada.

  12. Immigration . Vancouver Chinese Toronto South Asian Montreal Filipino Halifax Black . An issue that is developing is the aging population. . Need to reduce the number of yearly immigrants.

  13. Security . Desire to cut military and political ties overseas, and refocus attention on issues at home, such as: homeland defense, crime, and education. . Gradually phase out alliances outside of North America; not join other countries militarily unless their security is directly threatened.

  14. Security . Lower foreign policy profile in order to lower the risk of being attacked by terrorists. . With funds saved by reducing foreign involvement, more money will be available to build-up homeland defenses.
