  4. Journal Participial Phrases • Participles work as adjectives, modifying nouns and pronouns. Present participles end in ing, past usually end in ed. • Examples: She was behind the bookcases containing all the books of the law library. • Minute fungi spread over the exterior, hanging in a fine tangled web from the eaves.
