UNECE / UNFPA Seminar on CensusDissemination and Communication Ms. Sabrina Juran, Census Analyst, UNFPA HQ Geneva, 27 – 28 June 2011
What is CensusInfo? • CensusInfo is a software tool to disseminate census data on the web and CD-ROM UNITED NATIONS Statistics Division/DESA
Why CensusInfo? • Dissemination has been the weakest point of population and housing censuses • Costs not included in initial budget plans • Main focus on enumeration process • Dissemination is not priority • Importance of disseminating census data
Why CensusInfo? • Census Data Dissemination as one of the main goals of the Initiative “2010 World Programme on Population and Housing Census” • Assist countries in their efforts to disseminate census results in a timely manner
Why CensusInfo? • Develop a software solution to facilitate the dissemination of census results fulfilling following minimum criteria: Objectives • Easy to implement and easy to use • Free to use • Dissemination of census data at any geographical level • Customization for country-specific requirements • Dissemination on the web and CD-ROM • Software based on the latest DevInfodatabasse technology, version 6.0
Main features of CensusInfo • CensusInfo is user and administrator friendly software
Main features of CensusInfo • CensusInfo is user and administrator friendly software • Disseminates census results at any geographical level
Main features of CensusInfo • CensusInfo is user and administrator friendly software • Disseminates census results at any geographical level • Provides a suggested list of census topics, data and indicators with accompanying metadata (based on UN recommendations)

Activities to assist countries adapting CensusInfo • Regional workshops • Technical Support Missions on site • Basic Training • Advanced Training • User Application Training
REtrieval of DATa for small Areas of Microcomputer • Software tool developed by CELADE for processing, analyzing and disseminating census micro data. • Handles large volumes of micro data in a hierarchical structure and facilitates data processing for small geographical areas. • Use of the software has expanded and it is currently used for processing all types of data (micro or aggregated).
SOFTWARE IS USER FRIENDLY • DATA ARE ORGANIZED THROUGH ENTITIES/LEVELS IN A HIERARCHICAL STRUCTURE THAT KEEPS DEPENDENCY WITHOUT PROVIDING THE IDENTIFICATION OF EACH RECORD (CONFIDENTIALITY OF INFORMANTS IS KEPT) • PRODUCES TABULATIONS RAPIDLY AND EFFICIENTLY • EFFICIENT STORAGE OF DATA IN AN ENCRYPTED FORMAT • USER-DEFINED STUDY AREAS UPTO THE SMALLEST GEOGRAPHICAL DIVISION
ALLOWS FOR EASY EXPORTATION OF RESULTS (AGGREGATED ONLY, NEVER THE MICRO DATA) TO OTHER SOFTWARE (EXCEL, ASCII, SPSS) • ALLOWS THE CREATION OF THEMATIC MAPS & GRAPHS FOR EACH OUTPUT TABLE, AS WELL AS EXPORTATION TO GIS. • ENABLES DISSEMINATION OF DATA (microdata or aggregated data) THROUGH STAND ALONE APPLICATIONS ON CDs OR THROUGH THE WEB USING REDATAM WEB SERVER. • ON-LINE DATA PROCESSING (USING THE REDATAM WEB SERVER) OF THE MICRO DATA OR AGGREGATED DATA. • AVAILABLE FREE IN FOUR LANGUAGES: ENGLISH, PORTUGUESE, FRENCH AND SPANISH
On-line access to census Information • CELADE: • mirror site of the NSO web site or actual server for some countries census access. • 29 (22) countries offer on-line census processing with REDATAM • 18 in Latin America and Caribbean • 10 (3) in Africa (Cameron, Uganda and Kenya) and Cambodia
Each tabulation can be displayed as table, graph or map
ANALYSIS AND EXPLOITATION • Performed at small geographic units • such as the census block level • with data on internal migration • analyzed from the 2002 Chilean census • and processed with Redatam
SPATIAL ANALYSIS Statistical methods specifically developed for geo-referenced data such as Spatial Autocorrelation were used to identify if there existed spatial grouping or clusters in relation to child poverty. Spatial correlation for the variable Percentage of Children (0 – 17) living with shelter deprivation

Perspectives for the 2010 census round • Websites widely used for dissemination of census results and metadata • Democratization of access to micro data facilitating data analysis by third parties • More countries allow for census data processing online via internet • More countries are providing census data bases on CDs to decentralized institutions (like municipalities), using REDATAM applications to facilitate its use (and allowing for thematic mapping) • Need for further promotion of the use and analysis of census data • Need for training of human resources in demographic analysis • Further development of stand-alone applications to facilitate analysis • More south-south cooperation
