  1. 3.4 Simplifying Algebraic Expressions Including D-PropDay 2 CCSS 6.NS.4, 6.EE.2b, 6.EE.3,6.EE.4 Use D-Prop to express a sum of 2 whole numbers with common factors as a sum of two whole numbers with no common factors. Apply properties of expressions to generate equivalent expressions. Identify when two expressions are equivalent.

  2. Day 2 Distributive PropertyThe Distributive Property • Distribute: to spread out, to share Think of mail. The postal worker must distribute all letters to the houses. One person, many houses: One number to all numbers in the parentheses!

  3. The Distributive Property • Multiply the outside value with the quantity in the parentheses. • Examples: 3(4 + 8) = 3(4) + 3(8) 3(12)= 12 + 24 36 = 36 • Algebraically: a(b + c) = ab + ac a(b – c ) = ab – ac

  4. Day 2Simplifying Expressions • You will use like terms and the Distributive Property to simplify expressions. • Like terms will have the same variable raised to the same power. Constant terms are considered like terms.

  5. Like Terms : Terms that have the same variable(s) raised to the same power. Constant terms are always like terms.

  6. Example 1: More Variables • To combine like terms, • Identify like terms (circle or box them), if any. • Add or subtract the like terms Remember Like Terms have same variable, same power!

  7. Example 2: Distributive Property • To simplify: • Do the Distributive Property • Identify like terms, if any • Add or subtract like terms

  8. Practice • 1) Simplify 7z + 6 + z • 2) Simplify 6(5 + n) – 2n

  9. PRACTICE Simplify by combining like terms 3) x + 11 + 12x + 2 + x 4) 10(h + f + 5) + 2h
