Processing • The main processor within a computer system is called the CPU • CPU – Central Processing Unit • CPU basic tasks: • Storage of Data • Carrying out instructions such as opening computer programs • Performing arithmetic and logic operations • (performing calculations and taking decisions) • Control the flow of input and output signals within the system
Storage Hard drives Memory cards Tape storage USB Portable memory Floppy discs - less now CD / DVD / Blu-ray
Networks What do we mean by a Computer Network? • The linking of 2 or more computers • Giving the ability to share: Information • Files • Hardware (i.e. printers) Most computers are linked into a network using a Network Interface Card (NIC) Card Slots into an available PCI Slot on a Motherboard Wired or Wireless

Email & EDI Benefits of Email Email Problems A permanent record of each message is saved by both the sender and receiver Spam: unwanted advertising, be careful what you sign up for.. Computer virus's: sent as attachments Saves paper (except when offices still print them out!) Sender must have exact address, unlike normal post The same message can be sent to a large group of people at once A basic understanding of computer literacy is required Speed, messages are almost instantaneous Attaching documents Electronic Data Interchange (EDI) is the structured transmission of data between organizations by electronic means. It is used to transfer electronic documents from one computer system to another, i.e. from one trading partner to another trading partner.
Intranets / Extranets The Internet Millions of computers exchanging information around the world, its publicly accessible side is known to us as the World Wide Web and contains billions of pages of information. Intranets Works the same way as the internet, except it is limited within a business or organisation. Information can be shared within it, but not accessed by any external source. Extranets Basically an Intranet, but with external access is given to specified users, usually through a password based system.
