  1. Privacy Project Chancellor School Gr. 4 Students

  2. Privacy Project A small group of students decided to investigate a question their teacher had. This project will discuss these points: • Initial question • Resources used • How – methods • When, Where, Why and Audience • Summary of our Research • Personal Reflection

  3. Initial Question (Will) Initial question • Mrs. Wood asked if it was illegal or ethical to say titles out loud at video/DVD rental stores. Background • Mrs. Wood compared movie stores to school libraries. • She had her overdue titles read out loud. • She felt embarrassed. • She wanted more information. • Mrs. Wood chose four students Colin , Will , Boshra and Aneri to do an independent research project.

  4. Resources Used RESOURCES USED (Colin) • Survey Monkey • Phoning every video store on the list • Looking at websites • People: Mrs. Wood, store managers, Mme.Fogarty, Mrs. Romaniuk, FIPPA LADY, MB education (Mr. J. Tooth) • Video store • Winnipeg Public Library.

  5. Methods – How we did it? How: (methods) (Boshra) • Websites (Rogers, Blockbuster) • Small group meetings • Soft Phone (speaker phone) • Surveys - Survey Monkey • Mrs. Wood • FIPPA • Writing letters • Share information

  6. When, Where, Why & Audience When and Where (Aneri) • It started in November 2008 at the Pembina Hwy Blockbuster. [Mrs. Wood’s video loan] • Project done mostly at school. [ November-June] Audience and why • Grade 4-6, because 3’s, 2’s ,1’s and k’s might get bored and might not understand. • Staff, because they might find it interesting and helpful. • Pembina School Division librarians so they can teach other students. • Parents, because they might learn something new.

  7. Summary of our Research Bottom line: Stores are reading titles out loud (survey). Staff at stores not really aware or knowledgeable about this topic. FIPPA – doesn’t apply to private stores Office of the Privacy Commissioner of Canada PTSD & Wpg. Pub. Library – know and follow FIPPA rules mostly, but it’s not written in a policy.

  8. Students’ and Teachers’ Reflections William, Boshra, Collin, Aneri and Mme Fogarty

  9. Will’s Reflections I learned a lot about privacy rules and regulations. It was fun to do the longest project I have ever done. I have a few questions. Have other schools done this project? Have any video stores been sued for titles read out loud? What if you don’t want your library titles known by your parents? (public and school library)

  10. Boshra’s Reflections • I really liked the enrichment group. The confusing thing was that the person we called said that they didn’t have a privacy rule. • Who wouldn’t want to save other peoples privacy? • And my question is – Is there a law and consequences about the privacy policy?

  11. Colin’s Reflections • My reflection on the privacy policy is that it was a learning experience and very interesting. This was the longest project in the world!! • We have gone from not knowing any thing to knowing almost everything that you could know. • This once in a life time experience was great. I am very lucky to have been picked. • THIS WAS SO MUCH FUNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNN!

  12. Aneri’s Reflections • I learned that you shouldn’t say someone else’s overdue books; you should only say that you have one or two books out. • I think the project is really important because if someone said your overdue books out loud you would feel really embarrassed. This is really important because it is your privacy. • I want to make difference in life by telling librarians and other people. • I had sooo much fun. I feel really lucky that I got picked.

  13. Mme Fogarty’s reflections • I realized that this is a new area of information that is affecting all sorts of public and private organizations. • Getting information from many different sources can be confusing yet interesting. • I learned that Mrs. Wood is very flexible and lets her students learn new things in many different ways. The students were very keen and curious to find, understand and share their information. • The more you find out, the more you realize how much you don’t know.

  14. So What? What do we do this information? What does it matter?

  15. Appendix • Letter written to stores • Letter received from stores • Note from WPL to Mrs. Romaniuk • FIPPA website • FIPPA contact person • Survey Monkey Questionnaire
