PROGRAM DESCRIPTION The Summer Teacher Academy serves as an introduction to teaching and the teaching profession. It will focus on how to teach Math, Science, and Literacy to K-12 students. It will also provide you with: • Opportunities to meet with distinguished FDU faculty, educational leaders, and teachers to discuss issues pertinent to education • Meaningful creative, hands- on learning activities • Fun Math/Science activities • Teaching experience before college • Opportunities to make a difference in a student’s life • Team building exercises • Experiencing the FDU Metropolitan campus Each participant will be required to attend all sessions, participate in all activities and share his/her reflections about the Summer Teacher Academy. • CRITERIA • Students who are selected for • this program must meet the • following criteria: • Applicants must submit: PROGRAMORGANIZATION Registration will be limited to 20 high school juniors. This program will meet Monday through Thursday for two weeks (July 10 - 13 and July 17 -20) from 9:00 a.m. until 3:00 p.m. If additional time is needed, advance information will be sent home. Students are required to attend every session. Absences for compelling circumstances must be approved by the Program Coordinator. Letters of acceptance will be sent directly to the applicant. • Applicants must be high school juniors/incoming seniors • GPA of 2.8 or better on a 4.0 scale • Enrolled in college • preparatory courses • Two recommendations from teachers and/or school Counselor • Essay • Attach a copy of your recent report card. ALL EXPENSESCOVERED No tuition is charged for the Summer Teacher Academy. FDU will cover expenses for breakfast, lunch, and teaching materials. Program expenses do not include daily transportation to and from Fairleigh Dickinson University. TRANSPORATION REQUIRED Parents/guardians are responsible for transporting students to and from the program. Specific times and location of pick-up and drop-off areas will be provided prior to the beginning of the program. INSTRUCTORS Faculty will include FDU professors, local community and educational leaders.
HERE’S WHAT STUDENTS NEED TO DO TO APPLY: CHECKLIST □Completed Application. □Attach an essay (200-250 words typed) explaining why you are interested in pursuing a career as a teacher. □Attach two letters of recommendation from teachers and/or school counselor. □Attach a copy of your recent report card.
