The great zimbabwe Temples & buildings were some of the greatest in imperialist Africa but abandoned after 1450, & rediscovered in 1868. Between 500-1000 C.E. the plateau between Zambezi & Limpopo Rivers were settled by Shona (iron workers-agriculture based economy). Gold found along coast = thriving trade. Those who controlled gold mines = wealthy & powerful, therefore creating the base for a strong political state. The capital was Great Zimbabwe, & a temple was built by the Shona (like other religious structures of other societies). As Zimbabwe was being abandoned other areas were declaring their independence.
