  1. ERCOT Review of MOS Public and TML Degradation Commercial Operations Communications Working Group July 25, 2006

  2. MOS and TML Degradation • The ERCOT MOS Public and MOS TML websites have recently been experiencing performance degradations • Analysis shows these performance issues are directly related to systems designed to programmatically download data from ERCOT websites at short intervals (“screen scraping”) • This “scraping” activity results in websites being unusable by the market

  3. MOS and TML Degradation • ERCOT has taken actions to address performance degradation of ERCOT MOS Public and MOS TML websites • Many market participants have cooperated with this effort by stopping screen scraping, seeking alternatives, or reducing frequency of hits • ERCOT’s stance continues to be that resources are not sufficient to support the level of screen scraping experienced over the past month without degrading performance of the websites • ERCOT also realizes that it would be counterproductive to completely stop screen scraping and welcomes market participant involvement for mutual solutions feasible with available resources

  4. MOS and TML Degradation • Along with MP’s cooperation ERCOT is addressing this at two fronts: • 1.)  ERCOT web support and power systems staff are considering changes to ERCOT systems that are expected to help mitigate impacts from screen scraping and XML queries on ERCOT system performance; • 2.) ERCOT is contacting those entities who are hitting web pages at high rates, especially hitting pages at rates at much greater frequency than the page is update

  5. MOS and TML Degradation • Web Services, EMMS, Market Operations Support, Web and Data Services Development and Wholesale Client Services met last week to consider options. • Options and actions being considered: • Fix some issues how web pages are updating to the database. • Deploy “PERL Script” to CSC page to improve performance.  This page has been one of the most hit. • Consider shifting to a csv format for data delivery, expected to unload MOS Public and TML displays. • System fix is scheduled to improve Scheduled Mismatch query – it has a priority 1.  This also will help a MOS performance issue. • If a QSE has ICCP over the WAN ERCOT will assist in accessing Total ERCOT Regulation. • Entities with the highest volume and frequency of hits are being identified and for contact.
