  4. Countryside • Steppes and very waterless regions (West): • Normal seasons (spring, summer, autumn, winter) • No rain for years • More than 50°C in summer • Very cold nights in winter • Red sand

  5. Tropical rain forests (North): • Two Seasons (dry season between April and October and tropical time between November and March) • High humidity • Heavy rainfall • Green countryside

  6. History • Early European exploration of inland Australia was sporadic • John McDouall Stuart led expeditions in the Outback 150 years ago • Finding of gold: gold miner and farmers • Needs of transport and service systems rose

  7. Infrastructure • Few highways • Sporadic supply stations • “School of the Air“ • Road Trains:

  8. Population today • Farmers: • tending sheep and cows • Aborigines (60,000): • Today in reservations and slums of the cities • Biggest city Alice Springs: • 25,000 inhabitants • Hard life because of heat and drought
