  1. Apollos

  2. Paul Planted; Apollos Wateredbut God gave the increase! I Cor. 3:1-11

  3. Acts 19:24-28 • 1. Now a certain Jew • 2. He was named Apollos • 3. Apollos was born at Alexandria, • an eloquent man • and mighty in the Scriptures, • 4. Apollos came to Ephesus. • (never know what you will find when • You travel from one place to another!)

  4. 1. An Eloquent man.. • a) The Greeks used ‘eloquent’ not only to describe a learned person, but also one skilled in words.

  5. 2. Mighty in the scriptures • a) He was well acquainted with the O.T. scriptures and knew about John’s baptism. (Mk. 1:3,4; Matt. 3:2 ) • John’s baptism was only preparatory, • It looked to Jesus and his baptism. • Mk. 1:3,4; Matt. 3:2 • A person may be ‘mighty’in the scriptures but still not know all.

  6. He was instructed in the way of the Lord.. • He was preaching what he knew. • And notice what is said about this man: • 1. Fervent in the spirit. ‘the word ‘fervent’ is like unto water boiling…he was bubbling over with enthusiasm. • 2. Diligently teaching.. Carefully, • With skilled words.

  7. Aquila and Priscilla • 1. They listened. • 2. They took him unto them..called him aside privately. • 3. Expounded unto him the way of God more perfectly. Vs. 26. • Truth and Doctrine do matter!. One may be very sincere, zealous in what he believes, but he may not have a correct, complete understanding of • God’s Word.

  8. They Expounded unto him… • ‘expound’ explain, give a clear under-standing. “make sense” out of what • Is taught. • Some things about Apollos

  9. How we need that in the church today! • People who will ‘expound’ explain… • Clearly, simply, directly what the • Bible teaches… Just explain what God says: • Some will listen…and obey! • ..On subject of Marriage, Divorce and Remarriage. Matt. 19:9 • .. On subject of dying out of Christ.Heb.9:27 • John 14:6 • …On the subject of being faithful. • Rev. 2:10

  10. He Was an Eloquent Man • “A learned man”…mighty in the scriptures. • Are we? How much do we know • about God’s truth?

  11. 2 John 9,10

  12. John 5:39,40

  13. 2 Tim. 3:16,17

  14. 2 Tim. 4:2

  15. 2 Tim. 2:15

  16. Just as the Bible speaks of Moses as being a learned man.. • Acts 7:22 And Moses was learned in all wisdom of the Egyptians, and was mighty in words and deeds.

  17. A Fervent Man. Acts 18:25 • He was well informed about scriptures and he was determined to tell his fellow Jews. • ..fervent..literally means ‘to boil’ • Have you seen what happens to water when it boils. It’s hot and it bubbles like • Crazy. • cf. Rom. 12:11 ‘not slothful in business; fervent in spirit; serving the Lord.’

  18. He spake and taught diligently--- • the word ‘diligently’ means ‘carefully’ • accurately. • He combined fact (knowledge) and • Fervour into a great force for God. • The only problem he had was that what • He was teaching was incomplete.

  19. When Apollos got as far as John the Baptist, he stopped. His knowledge • did not include the facts about Calvary, • the resurrection of Jesus. He didn’t know that! • He was zealous, but did not have • The complete knowledge of the Gospel of Christ. • cf. Rom. 10:1-4

  20. Acts 19:1-7 • Men who were baptized with John’s baptism, were baptized into Christ!

  21. Apollos was a Teachable manActs 18:26 • O, if only we could get people to be • So willing to listen. • Aquila and Priscilla , upon hearing • Apollos, take him aside unto themselves.. • And expound unto him the way of the Lord more perfectly…more completely. • Notice the way they did this: • Privately…took him aside.

  22. There are some people you can teach… • Preach the Gospel to every creature. • Matt. 28:18-20; Mark 16:15 • And there are some who will not receive • True doctrine of Christ.

  23. Teach them that they need to assemble • With the saints. Heb. 10:25 • Teach them to not steal, not lie, not • Love the world ( I John 2:15-17)… • Some will listen, some will not. • Here was an outstanding preacher who • Had to be taught more perfectly..accurately.

  24. Will Elders be willing to be taught? • Will Deacons listen to God’s Word and • Learn? • Will preachers accept the fact they don’t know everything, and listen?

  25. A Guided Man,ZealousMan… Acts 18:27 • Apollos now goes forth with the information that he has learned and • Teaches effectively that Jesus is the • Messiah.

  26. Look what the Bible says about him: • For he mightily convinced the Jews, and that publickly, shewing by the scriptures that Jesus was Christ.

  27. Gal. 2:20

  28. Rom. 5:8,9

  29. I Cor. 3:4,5,6 • Apollos becomes a powerful preacher of the gospel of Christ. • ..Paul and Apollos, ‘ministers by whom ye believed,’ I Cor. 3:5 • I Cor. 3:6 I (Paul) planted, • Apollos watered, • but God gave the increase!

  30. Notice these things about Apollos • 1. A person in the Word (v.24) Mighty in the scriptures. • To know them, you have to study them! Learn them, spend time with them! • 2. A person of the Word . (v.25a) Instructed in the way of the Lord..You have to live it. (Phil. 1:27) • 3. A person by the word (v.25b) fervent in spirit –on fire for God!

  31. Let us all learn that we need to • 1. Never give up on anyone. As long as there is life, there is hope! • 2. Ask God to help us to be like Apollos.. • And be willing to learn. • 3. Go forth and do as Apollos did… • Use the scriptures and convince others that Jesus is the Christ!

  32. That’s what Sebastian did… • He was searching…and found the truth! • Are you seeking to know the truth on • Every thing that God ‘s word teaches? • 1. What about baptism? Have you been baptized. I Pet. 3:21 • 2. What about confessing your sins. • I John 1:9.
