  1. Who were the Sumerians, Babylonians, and Assyrians? Understanding who they were and where they were from, and the impact they have on our lives today

  2. Location • Mesopotamia- Mesopotamia is located in modern day Iraq. • Within Mesopotamia there were three “Main” civilizations that developed. • Sumer • Babylon • Assyria

  3. Definition • Sumer- The Sumerians were one of the earliest societies in the world. They made their home in Southern Mesopotamia more than 5000 years ago.

  5. Babylonians • Babylon- The Babylonian Empire was brought to be by many rulers/kings. However the one king that made the largest impact was King Hammurabi. • Hammurabi was the 6th king to take power and is probably the most well know figure of the Babylonian society/empire because of his harsh set of laws. • CHECK OUT PAGE 134 map to see the size of the Babylonian Empire

  6. Who was Hammurabi • King Hammurabi was an important Babylonian king known for his early law code, the Code of Hammurabi. He united Mesopotamia and made Babylonia an important power. • Hammurabi was the 6th king of the 1st Babylonian dynasty -- about 4000 years ago. We don't know for sure when, during the general period of 2342 and 1050 B.C., he ruled, but we are pretty sure it was around 1792-1750.

  9. Definition • Assyria- An ancient empire and civilization of western Asia in the upper valley of the Tigris and Euphrates Rivers.

About the Assyrians • Later, in the 1200 BC, a group called the Assyrians (pronounced uh-SIR-ee-unz) from northern Mesopotamia briefly gained control of Babylon. • However their empire did not stand long before it was over-run. After defeat it took about 300 years for the Assyrians to recover and promote their dominance once again.

  12. About Assyria • Starting around 900 BC, the Assyrians began to conquer all of the Fertile Crescent. • They even took over parts of Asia Minor and Egypt.

  13. Assyrians keys to victory • The key to the Assyrians’ success as their strong army • The Assyrians used iron weapons and chariots. • The army was very well organized and every soldier had a role they were to follow and most did

Assyrian battle plans • First they would spread terror by looting (or taking peoples possessions. • Then they would burn the crop fields. • Then anyone who dared to stay and fight, got the fight of their lives. • After they took over the town, they would establish a leader of the town who would : • Enforce taxes • Make laws • Create new troops for the empires army
