Background – Demographics • *Source 2017 Census Bureau's American Community Survey (ACS) • **Source California Department of Social Services Over 400,000* residents identify themselves as ELL Since 2013 almost 10,000 refugees have been settled in San Diego County** High drop rate for ELL classes Rapid Employment is needed along with sustainable wage and career path

  3. Initiative Drivers / Funding Rapid employment for Refugee and ELL community English language for workplace success Acclimation to American style workplace ELL Grant WIOA Contracted Education funding Program should be self sustaining through standard fees(open enrollment)

  4. Curriculum andProgram Design Wrap around English language learning component that is “workplace” focused to accelerate ELL learning. Intensive bootcamp like experience curriculum schedule (7 weeks) Integration with the job centers to develop jobs, resumes, interview skills, and secure interviews for participants

Lessons Learned • Start earlier with recruitment of participants • Work with career center to identify appropriate participants • Institutes of higher education referrals are important • Local NPO’s that provide services for ELL’s should be included • Closer alignment with career centers and businesses • Workshops can assist in preparing for interviews and resume building • Include milestone activities throughout course • Day in the life presenters • Business looking to hire

  6. Success/Results • Enrollment • 18 enrolled • 16 completed • Exams • 7 passed all certifications • 6passed IT fundamentals • 1 participant is employed in IT position (Customer Service) • Primary languages of participants (Russian, Dari, Arabic, Spanish)
