Healthcare ComputingeHealthDigital HealthIt doesn’t matter to clinicians which jargon is in fashion; they just expect ICT to be at their service
What clinicians really, really want To see as many patients as possible, quickly, efficiently and effectively, without causing harm to the patients or to themselves
Electronic patient records Easy access (security = necessary evil) A unified user interface (or at least SSO) Different views (patient-centric / workflow oriented) A balance between free and structured text Clinical decision support tools
Diagnostic systems Medical imaging (from PACS to AI) Laboratory (from digital pathology to AI) Bio-signals (ECG, EEG, EMG, etc: now feeding EPR, plus AI) Shift from one-off measurements to “live streaming” of bio-parameters (e.g. HR, glucose) and data from wearables, phones
Knowledge sources Clinical decision support (starting with “classic” drug-drug / drug-condition checks) Easy access to clinical / pharma info when needed (supported by structured records) Interpretation of DNA data Easy access to administrative information (boring but essential)
Communication With patients: patient portals, (?secure) email, (?secure) messaging With other clinicians formally: e-referrals / e-discharge summaries / inter-professional consultations With other clinicians informally: role of social media
Developments in Malta Systems at Mater Dei Hospital (incl. UpToDate) myHealth portal Health-related CONvErGE components, esp: Health Data Exchange EPRs for Primary Health Care National Electronic Health Records Malta BioBank / Human Genome Project
Semantic opportunities in Malta Enablers: Use of English in the healthcare system Malta is a SNOMED Member Country (free SCT affiliate licences available) Standardisation at national level is feasible (clinical terminology & classifications, health messaging & document exchange standards)
