Good source for research • The system descriptions cannot be found elsewhere. • All Nordic countries are participating, also Faroe Islands, Greenland and Åland Islands. • Long-term collaboration from 1946 (social statistics) and 1966 (health statistics). • Most comparable data and more accurate data than in the other international statistical data sources, e.g. Eurostat, OECD and WHO. • Interesting (but underfunded) ad hoc projects. • Soon: • New database • Publication as soon as the data are ready (not once a year)
Possibilities for the future • Abandon the aggregated data collection and introduce data collection and dissemination based on individual case records. • Hospitalisations, surgical procedures, cancers, deaths, even medication (prescription registers) • Open questions: • How to solve the data protection issues? • How to support the researchers when using the data? • Funding?
