  2. Introduction • Plan calls for annual progress reports • Necessary for adaptive management • At first implementation reports: What actions taken? • Later: What effects can we see from our actions? • Year 5: First reassessment, are we on the right track?

  3. Survey Purpose • Solicit information from ILA jurisdictions and others • Highlights activities underway • 1st Annual Report • Implementation Strategy

  4. Survey Overview • Internet-based survey (King County tool) • ILA Jurisdictions received two surveys • Programmatic, land use, monitoring activities • Habitat projects • Other WRIA 8 partners given open-ended survey

  5. Programmatic Survey Structure • Issued to all 27 jurisdictions in WRIA 8 • Condensed Start List into major topics: • Stormwater • Water quality • Water quantity/conservation • Lakeshore/shoreline • Landscaping/yard care • Forest/riparian cover

  11. Stormwater / Water Quality • All jurisdictions offer or plan to offer in ’08 water quality education materials • All stormwater activities all related to NPDES permit

  12. Landscaping / Yard Care • 60% currently employ a natural yard care program or plan to in ’08 • Another 30% plan to conduct yard care program in the long term Photo: King County

  13. Landscaping / Yard Care, cont. • Garden tours or workshops showcasing salmon-friendly landscape design • 27% currently do; 22% plan in future • Education programs for landscape designers/contractors • 72% plan to do in the future Photo: King County

  14. Forest and Riparian Cover • 72% promote forest cover retention & riparian buffer protection • >75% hold volunteer events, such as tree plantings & other restoration activities • All but one has updated CAO since 2003 • All report tree protection ordinances

  15. Water Conservation • 67% have programs • ~60% either actively promote groundwater protection, or plan to in the future • Over half have designated Critical Acquifer Recharge Areas

  16. Shoreline Programs • Updating SMP • 11 will update by 2009; 4 by 2011 • Outreach shoreline maintenance & alternatives to bulkheads • Only 3 currently have, 5 plan w/in 3 years, 4 in long term
