Permeability • Come up with three different examples to explain: (draw a picture if it helps) • Permeable • Impermeable • Selectively Permeable
Permeability • Come up with three different examples to explain: (draw a picture if it helps) • Permeable- An open door is permeable to humans • Impermeable- A brick wall is impermeable to humans • Selectively Permeable- A window with a screen is selectively permeable.
Solutions • In each example identify the SOLUTE and the SOLVENT • Making Koolaid by combining the mix and water • Making chocolate milk by mixing milk and chocolate syrup • Making a 40% corn syrup solution by mixing 40ml of corn syrup into 60ml of water Solute = Mix Solvent= Water Solute = Chocolate Solvent= Water Solute = Corn Syrup Solvent= Water
Diffusion and Osmosis • Give three examples of diffusion. Draw a picture model of one • How is osmosis similar to diffusion? (Don’t just say ‘osmosis is a type of diffusion’ explain what that means!) • How is osmosis different than diffusion? • How does osmosis have an effect on a cells mass?
Diffusion and Osmosis • Give three examples of diffusion. Draw a picture model of one • How is osmosis similar to diffusion? (Don’t just say ‘osmosis is a type of diffusion’ explain what that means!) • How is osmosis different than diffusion? • How does osmosis have an effect on a cells mass? Osmosis is the movement of WATER from an area of higher concentration to lower concentration Diffusion can be any particle, Osmosis is water specific How water moves into or out of the cell can change the mass.
Types of solutions • Draw a picture model of a cell in each of the three types of solutions. • Name the type of solution above the picture • The amount of solute inside and outside of the cell should be clear! (either dots or %) • Show the direction of the flow of osmosis • Say if the cell would gain mass, lose mass or stay the same.
Types of solutions • Isotonic solution- Concentrations of solute are equal between the inside and outside environment. Water moves at equilibrium, so no overall change in mass of cell 25% Sugar 75% water 25% Sugar 75% water EVERYTHING IS EQUAL!
Types of Solutions • Hypertonic solution- Greater concentration of solute in the solution than in the cell. OSMOSIS pulls water out of the cell making it lose mass 60% Sugar 40% Water 25% Sugar 75% Water CELL SHRIVELS UP !
Types of solutions • Hypotonic solution- Greater concentration of solute in the cell than in the solution. OSMOSIS pulls water into the cell making it gain mass. 40% Sugar 60% Water CELLS SWELL WITH WATER AND CAN BURST! 25% Sugar 75% Water
