  2. NATURAL VS. CULTURED PEARLS Pearl gemstones are produced by mollusks such as oysters and mussels. A pearl forms when an irritant, such as a grain of sand, enters the mollusk. In response, the mollusk secretes layers of nacre (a combination of calcium carbonate and conchiolin) around the irritant, eventually forming a pearl.
