PDMLink Implementationat Los Alamos National Laboratory Introduction to PDMLink Product Data Management System • LA-UR 09-03390
PDMLink Introduction • Product Data Management (PDM) Link is a product definition, configuration management, and collaboration tool. PDMLink is the first data management system that retains Computer Aided Design data parametric relationships while providing configuration management and control to other document types. • PDMLink is an application tool to manage the day to day technical work that goes on in support of products • PDMLink is not an ERP or MRP system but can interface with these systems • There are many similar tools on the market however PDMLink is the only one that has a seamless integration with native Pro/E CAD data • PDMLink is also completely web based
PDMLink Basic Architecture • Seven system elements constitute the application environment for Windchill PDMLink Windchill PDMLink Indexing Server Oracle Server Client LDAP Server Web Server Mail Server
PDMLink Basic Architecture (cont.) • Windchill Benefits • Single source of product information/content enables development efficiencies, reduces errors and rework • Complete product definition and collaboration capabilities expertly drive cross-enterprise understanding of information - regardless of source • Repeatable, end-to-end process support and automation speeds time-to-market and reduces development cost • Secure, industry-standard Internet architecture delivers a safe, high-performing technology platform PTC's production-proven content and process management software enables companies to streamline product development processes and deliver superior physical goods and information for products in a fast, secure environment and requires only a Web browser to access.
PDMLink Basic Architecture (cont.) WindchillPDMLink Web Server • The Java-based WindchillPDMLink Web Server is the application tier of the PDMLink system and provides system logic for behavior and data element relationships. • The Web Server enables Web connectivity and serves Web pages as part of the client tier. These two elements make up the technology core of the PDMLink solution. Client • Client machines, used by the user community, only require the latest browsers and network connectivity to access data and execute tasks. Because PDMLink is a web-based application, accessing information is as simple and familiar as “surfing the Web.” The client machine and the Web server together compose the client tier of PDMLink. Windchill PDMLink
PDMLink Basic Architecture (cont.) Oracle Server • The Oracle Server is used as the database repository for PDMLink metadata and creates a persistence tier for the PDMLink system. Content files may also be stored in the Oracle database, but they are often referenced and stored elsewhere on the network. • The Oracle Server, PDMLink Server, and client machines connected to the Web Server establish a three-tier architecture, which is scalable and easier to manage than traditional client server environments. PDMLink Web Server Oracle Server Client
PDMLink Basic Architecture (cont.) Searching • FAST Instream is an Indexing Server, which enables full-text search capabilities in PDMLink’s search engine. Configuration options in the indexing server enable you to segregate collections of the searchable data. • At LANL, we are in testing phase with a Google search appliance LDAP Server • PDMLink uses a Lightweight Directory Access Protocol (LDAP) Server to reference user, group, and organizational data. PDMLink comes bundled with a stand-alone LDAP server. You may also configure PDMLink to access an existing corporate LDAP Server. We currently use the integrated LDAP in Windchill, but hope to transition to to LANL’s LDAP in the near future. Mail Server • PDMLink is designed to accommodate all SMTP compliant e-mail servers, which are used to send notification of system events to the user community. An example of this would be for a Project Owner to send an invitation for member(s) to join a particular project.

Understanding PDMLink Terminology Common PDMLink terminology: Products, Libraries, Projects and Programs • Products provide an organizational context for product definition. Product context contain end items composed of structured assemblies of parts with associated CAD documents and documents as well as other end items. • Libraries provide an organizational context for similar, yet non-product specific data storage. Library contexts enable the association of administrative policies, such as access control, indexing, event notification, and external file faulting rules to the objects in the library. • Projects are for developmental work. Projects are easy to create and manage by any user. Projects have great collaboration tools. There is iteration control but no revision or full configuration management (A.1, A.2 but can’t go to B). When objects in a project mature they can be sent to a Product or Library for full configuration control. • Programs are new to PDMLink 9.0. Programs are used for easier searching and access to multiple products, projects, or Libraries.
LANL Use Policies Red vs. Yellow and use policies • Yellow server is used for non-programmatic administration work or clearly non weapons unclassified work • The Red PDMLink server is for all weapons work Need To Know Controls • Projects: Administered by Project Leader • Products: Administered by Product Manager • Libraries: Setup and controlled by Business Administration team to meet the customers needs
PDMLink Infrastructure at LANL Yellow and Red setups include: • Production Server Backed up every night to an external site • Qualification Server Used for final testing before implementation on production server • Development Server(s) Test beds for new functionality or upgrades
Supported File Types • PDMLink will accept all file extensions • File types that PDMLink recognizes allow you to launch the application from PDMLink (MS Office, Adobe, image files, etc)
Object Types and Uses Windchill PDMLink Objects Documents CAD Documents Parts, End Items Links Change Items
Account Management Principal Administrators Principal Administrators support creation and maintenance of Windchill business objects describing users, groups, and organizations on both red (classified) and yellow (non-classified) networks. User Accounts Information: User name Full name E-mail address (imperative) Organization Password
Configured Doc Types Configured Documents or “Soft Documents” simply allow you to define your own set of attributes or parameters that you want to be able to search on LANL has rolled 7 types all under one document. LANL Document is used for: • Administrative Documents • Correspondence and Memos • System Engineering Document • Integrated Work Document • Engineering Authorization (released legacy) • Product Definition (released tiff of a drawing) • Support Drawing (released specs, etc)
PDMLink User Interface The Organization and Site tabs are limited to Business Administrators only. Yellow or highlighted box indicates active screen Search Tools Major Tabs Minor Tabs Customize View by: Folders, Documents, Author, In Work, Parts, etc. Details View
Home-Utilities Utilities minor tab allows you to set up user specific preferences, download software and many other utilities.
