  1. Guyana StandardsGCP 26: 2007Code of Practice for the design and construction of septic tanks and associated secondary treatment and disposal systemsGuyana National Bureau of Standards

  2. Purpose • Septic tanks are basically sedimentation/floatation chambers • where solids will settle and greasy waste will float to allow • for better infiltration or percolation of partially treated wastewater into subsurface strata. • The effluent from ST contains high levels of human pathogens (Bacteria, viruses, etc)

  3. Considerations • (a) the position and nature of outfall ditches and small streams; • (b) the position of any boreholes, wells, or water storage tanks; • (c) the invert level of the drain at its point of entry into the proposed septic tank; • (d) the effect of seepage and surface water from surrounding areas at higher levels than the proposed absorption area; and • (e) the effect of seepage from the proposed absorption area on surrounding inhabited areas.

  4. Calculations V = 1,000 + N ( C x T + K x Lf ) • V = Useful volume, in liters • N = Number of people or contribution units • C = Contribution of dispossessions, in liter/person x day or in liter/unit x day • T = Detention period, in days • K = Rate of accumulation of sludge digested on days, equivalent in addition to accumulation of sludge fresh • Lf = Contribution of sludge fresh, in liter/person x day or in liter/unit x day or in liter/unit x day

  5. Calculations L = V / (1000 x W x HD) • W – width • HD – in meters • Length to width ration between 2 and 3

  6. 1.5 m from building and property boundary • Accessible for de-sludging and maintenance

  7. Septic Tank Dimensions Toilet waste only (very low soil permeability: perc. rate>60 min)

  8. > 30 m from water source > 2.5 m from any habitation

  9. Where water table below 1.8 m or impermeable soil
