Small Business Technology TRansfer Acoustic Emission Bearing Fault Diagnostics System AI Signal Research, Inc. Huntsville, Alabama AEBDS is a PC-based, high-frequency bearing health monitoring system (HMS) utilizing acoustic emission (AE) sensor technology coupled with innovative high-frequency signal processing techniques for incipient fault detection of rolling element bearings. INNOVATION • ACCOMPLISHMENTS • Development stage: AEBDS: prototype PC-SIGNAL (software): beta-version • The AEBDS system successfully detected incipient bearing degradation in a series of comprehensive bearing tests in a controlled laboratory environment with a commercially available BridgePort mill. The STTR-funded research culminated with the effective demonstration of AEBDS on the high-speed Simplex Turbopump at NASA/MSFC Test Stand 500. • COMMERCIALIZATION • Product/service name; trademark name: PC-SIGNALTM: General-purpose vibration signal analysis software AEBDS: PC-based HMS integrating PC-SIGNAL with AE sensors and high-frequency data acquisition hardware • Primary target/potential market sectors: aircraft/helicopter industries, rocket engine manufacturers, transportation industry, nuclear power industry • Beta-version of PC-SIGNALTM is currently available. The expected entry date into market is January 1, 2000. • U.S. ARMY Redstone Technical Test Center (RTTC) is utilizing PC-SIGNALTM for vibration test data reduction and analysis. • Unique competitive advantage: novel signal analysis techniques and easy-to-use interface software allow engineers to perform vibration analysis with a very cost-effective system. AEBDS • GOVERNMENT/SCIENCE APPLICATIONS • Actual: AEBDS has performed accurate and timely bearing health monitoring of the NASA/MSFC Simplex Turbopump. PC-SIGNAL has been utilized by NASA engineers to analyze propulsion system high-frequency data (Fastrac, X-33, SSME), along with engine component level unsteady data. • Potential: PC-SIGNAL has applications for general dynamic data analysis and health monitoring/diagnostics of transmission systems in rocket engine, aircraft, helicopter, and production-line machinery. • Other USG application: PC-SIGNAL has been utilized by ARMY RTTC for post-test vibration data analysis. The easy-to-use software design of PC-SIGNAL has significantly reduced analysis time for quick evaluation of large volume of test data and has enhanced the productivity of RTTC’s data analysis. The PC-based software provides a cost-effective solution when compared to its costly analysis predecessor.
