North Korea For decades North Korea - also known as the Democratic People's Republic of Korea - has been one of the world's most secretive countries. Its government doesn't like people from outside the country going there and finding out what's going on. It's thought that North Korea has been developing big weapons for decades. Many think the country is working on making nuclear weapons, powerful bombs that can cause a lot of damage. For example, on 13th April 2013 a rocket launched by North Korea exploded just after taking off. The unmanned spacecraft broke up into about 20 pieces, which crashed back down to Earth and landed in the sea. North Korea says the rocket was meant to carry a satellite into orbit. Other countries think they were trying out technology that could be used for a nuclear weapon.
Kenyan authorities are close to ending a siege by a group of armed men, on a shopping centre in the capital Nairobi. Witnesses say between ten to 15 people stormed the Westgate Shopping Mall in Nairobi at lunchtime on Saturday. The shopping centre was packed with people out shopping or dining. Kenyan authorities say at least 62 people have died since the attack began, with around 170 people injured. Kenya The group is based in the next-door country Somalia and is linked with the fundamentalist Islamist organisation, al-Qaeda. Al-Qaeda have been behind a number of major attacks and bombings against western countries in recent years. Al-Shabab says the attack is in response to Kenya sending soldiers in 2011 to help Somalian authorities try to remove al-Shabab from the country. There are about 4,000 Kenyan troops in the south of Somalia, where they have been fighting the militants since 2011.
Syria The violence in Syria began in March 2011. The middle eastern country has been crippled by a brutal civil war. Since then, the United Nations estimates more than 100,000 people have died in the clashes between President Bashar al-Assad's government and rebel forces who want him out. In September 2013, United Nations inspectors confirmed that chemical weapons had been used in Syria, but the report did not say who was responsible. Syria, however, denies using chemical weapons, which are banned under international law because the effects of their use are so horrific. The government said: "there is no country in the world that uses a weapon of ultimate destruction against its own people."
Lebanon Thousands of Syrian refugees have been walking for days to escape the violence that's tearing apart the city of Homs. There are reports coming from there that the Syrian army is killing and torturing innocent people. Many are escaping to the neighbouring countries of Lebanon, Turkey and Jordan; but the journey is dangerous with Syrian forces attacking the route. In his address to the General Assembly, President Sleiman called the Syrian refugee crisis “the most pressing and biggest burden” facing Lebanon, and said the country’s resources have been stretched to their capacity, with more than one-fourth of the population now made up of Syrian refugees.
