  1. Journée de reflexion du DPNC Conclusions 2012 Martin Pohl

  2. High energy • LHC and ATLAS • Impressive performance: collider, experiment, computing • Detector well understood: jets, leptons, missing energy • Analysis closely follows data taking, 3-4 thesis per year • Top physics: SM but not so standard • Papers 50% on searches: SUSY, WIMPs and exotics not found up to ~TeV range (but would have been if they existed!) • Higgs WW, ZZ, γγ: M < 135 GeV, new results for ICHEP • If Higgs exists: measure properties/couplings, regularization of VV scattering • If light Higgs does not exists: what keeps VV scattering finite? • Extend mass range by high luminosity 30%/3000 fb-1 • Upgrades • Phase 0: IBL • Phase 1: pile-up ~50, MUCH, LV1 calo trigger,FTK,AFP2018 • Phase 2: new inner detector, pixel, short+long strips2021/22

  3. ATLAS@LHC DPNC: IBL AFP, FTK? ? or LEP3 or CLIC?

  4. High precision FAST • Current experiment: • Muon lifetime • FAST@PSI • Final results this summer • Future project: • Lepton flavor violation • MU3E@PSI

  5. Neutrinos • Oscillations probeobscuresector of SM: flavor • Neutrinos have mass and they oscillate, νe disappear from νe beam and appear in νμ beam, ντ appear in νμ beam • Attention: total cross section a few fb! Single events! • T2K is leading long baseline experiment, final statistics in 2020 • Maki-Nakagawa-Sakata matrix in leptonic weak charged current! • Θ13 large, good news for mass hierarchy; Θ23 not maximal? • « Normal » or « inverted » hierarchy? Mass scale? • Dirac or Majorana or both? Sterile heavy νR, anti-νL? CP violation? • Future beams and experiments: • Daya Bay II (20 kt) • Pingu for IceCube, cheap and quick option? • CN2PY + LAGUNA/LBNO (20 kt)? • INO (50 kt), Hyper-K (1 Mt),LBNE, NF2PY • CP phase not for tomorrow!

  6. CAP Genève Space Projects • Data taking phase: • Integral: data center at ISDC ESA • AMS on ISS: large UniGe contribution NASA • Planck: no Swiss hardware, analysis ESA • Construction phase: • POLAR: GRB polarimeter for Tiangong 2, CAP + PSI GESSA • ASTRO-H: filter wheel mechanism, CAP + RUAGJAXA • Assessment and definition phase: • EUCLID: selected M2, shutter design ISDC ESA • JEM-EUSO on ISS: LIDAR actuator JAXA • LOFT: M3 candidate, Large Area Detector, CAP + CSEM ESA • DAMPE GESSA • Conceptual design phase: • HERD (next step beyond AMS and FERMI)GESSA All phases, all major players

  7. Ground-based and underground AP expt’s • Data taking phase: • IceCube: atmospheric  astrophysical  cosmological neutrinos • Flares and point sources: new results soon • Upgrades: Pingu, ARA • Multi-messenger astrophysics: • Promissing paradigm: attack sources by all means (γ, CR, ν, gravitational waves) • Photons of multiple wavelengths: Source properties, acceleration mechanisms • Photons, neutrinos: Source properties, leptonic vs hadronic • Preparatory phase: • Cherenkov Telescope Array, ATLAS-size project, wide physics scope • FACT camera prototype (with ETHZ) • UniGe proposal: Davis-Cotton SST with FACT-type camera

  8. General observations • I share the excitement about initial LHC and ATLAS performance and results. • I do not share the premature disappointment with the lack of immediate spectacular discoveries. • We have only scratched the surface of LHC physics! • The « weight » of different pillars inside particle physics in « public opinion » is subject to large short term shifts. • Do not listen to this, our time scale is 10y! • There is no more grace period for esperiments, where statistical error hides systematics. Its all about systematics, stupid! • In general, our Road Map is still right! We can continue to use it to orient us.

  9. Conclusions • DPNC is: • Innovative power in detector design, construction and data analysis; • Perseverance in getting at the physics; • Proliferation of projects for the future. • My opinion: we should not reduce our ambitions easily! • How can we live up to our ambitions? • We need a perspective for growth in personnel. • We need to maintain and develop technical groups and their skills. • NCCR Universe will give this perspective, if approved. • In addition we need investment funds comparable to the initial ATLAS investment. Existing sources are insufficient. • We must use all imaginable sources: local, federal, European. • If we want any or all of this to be successful, we need the general public to support us. Reach out!

  10. Thanks • Thanks to all speakers for their high quality presentations. • Thanks to all participants for lively discussions. • Thanks to Teresa and Xin for organising the scientific contents. • Thanks to Catherine and Liliane for organising the venue. • Thanks to Mother Nature for providing us with unlimited mysteries to study.
