California Missions • Missions: Religious outpost established by the government of Spain to pacify the natives and attempt to convert them to Christians. • California missions protected by military • Farming and Ranching
Texas Missions • Weak mission system because of distance • Conflict with American Indians … Problem? • Tejonos: Spanish cattle-ranchers in Texas
Mexico Gains Independence • Sept. 1810 - Poor Spaniards & American Indians revolt • They hope that independence will improve living conditions. (SOUND FAMILIAR?) • 1821 – Mexico wins independence! • 1824 : Constitution makes Mexico a republic • Includes present day: Arizona, California, Nevada, New Mexico, Texas, Utah.
Changes in Texas • Many Tejanos were killed or chased away during the war. • Mexico worried that so few people could not protect Texas. Who are they worried about?
Americans in Texas • Mexico hired agents to bring people to Texas. • Agents received free land. • Stephen Austin: • Agents who created a colony on the lower Colorado River. • 1834: 20,000 Americans • Man=640 Acres, plus landfor women, children and slaves.
Trouble in Texas • MAJORITY OF PEOPLE LIVING IN MEXICO ARE AMERICANS. • NOT MEXICAN CITIZENS. • LIVING UNDER MEXICAN LAW. • BUT OFTEN IGNORED. PROBLEM??? You tell me? What might happen??
Trouble in Texas • Requirements to live in Texas: • Become a Mexican citizen • Obey Mexican laws • Support the Roman Catholic Church • Texans ignored requirements • Mexico responded by raising tariffs on goods & sending troops to Texas. • 1834: Santa Anna suspends Mexico’s constitution.
Texas Revolution • Oct. 1835 – April 1836 • Nov. 1835 - A group of Texans formed a temporary gov’t with goals: • Defeat Santa Anna • Restore Mexico’s republic constitution
Texas Revolution • Battle of the Alamo • Texans surrounded andout numbered by Mexican soldiers. • After 13 days of fighting Mexican soldiers win. • What effect would this have on the people of Texas?
Texas Becomes a Republic • Texas delegates wrote a declaration of independence & a constitution. • Based on the U.S. Constitution, but made slavery legal • Santa Anna was defeated at the Battle of San Jacinto. • Defeated by Sam Houston • Forced to sign the peace treaty!TEXAS WINS!
