  1. Results of the Critical Outcome Think Tank7/8/08 • Present: Jason, Les, Joan, June, Amy, Corey, Prachee Ann S., Mia, Randy Z.,

  2. 08-09 Approved (8/15/08)Critical Outcome-Building Goal Critical Outcomes Set a SMART goal and measure student improvement on one common assessment per course using both formative and summative data. Note: No change from the 07-08 goal

  3. Expectations that are related to the goal… 08-09 • Score and record at least the two common critical outcome assessments already established in each department by grade. Scores will be collected within departments by June 2009. • The SMART goal must include monitoring students from the bottom 2 achievement levels (“did not meet” and “partially meets”) of the spring ‘08 MCA. • SMART goals must be aggressive in growth targets in order to match the growth that will be needed in order to succeed on improving proficiency on the MCA’s. • Assumption: improved achievement in content specific assessments will correspond to improvement in standardized tests. If students are not achieving in their content areas, interventions must be provided and document “what works” and “what doesn’t” in order to positively impact MCA results.

  4. Final recommendations…(these are the recommendations that came at the end of the think tank that ALL agreed to) • Set department strategies for working with individual students in lowest groups (targeted and focused by name) • Develop reflective piece on formative data (partner with Excel partner) and do it more often • ATPPS program target an AYP cell for PDP’s or 5% or both

  5. Final recommendations…(these are the recommendations that came at the end of the think tank that ALL agreed to) • Have Beta Force review SMART goals that are set. Targeted groups should have at least 15-20 students in them to be targeted for improvement. (encourage dept. to monitor themselves with this information) • Everyone implement at least one common/formative assessment during the year • Mia: systematize and formalize collection of department SMART goals • Add check-ins (time frames) to check on NCLB subgroups

  6. Final recommendations… (these are the recommendations that came at the end of the think tank that ALL agreed to) Be prepared to offer training/support as appropriate on: • Writing a SMART goal • Constructing a formative assessment including pre-tests • How to use data from formative assessments • How to differentiate instruction - if I know how to do it am I implementing? • How to enter data, display data, Excel training • Implementing the full cycle

  7. Final recommendations…(these are the recommendations that came at the end of the think tank that ALL agreed to) • Perhaps use a timeline with dates instead of logic model • Checklist by department for SD1 • Leadership check every 4 weeks - reflective practice on each teacher based on department goal. Goal --Data --What to do with information (Mass interventions vs. individual interventions)

  8. Special Note: The next slide is the logic model. Realizing that this may be challenging to read due to the font and format, following the logic model are slides that basically summarize the boxes. We’ll need to come to consensus on the bullets during Wednesday’s meeting in order to present this for BTS workshop regarding the plan for the year. The details of the boxes can be revised through Beta Force meetings throughout the year.

  9. 08-09

  10. Summary of the logic model… • Early Release/Late Starts: • This time is dedicated for this building goal • Department’s share their progress with each other

  11. Summary of the logic model… 2. IDT Time: • 2x a month review formative and summative assessment data (disaggregated) • Professional learning log to document “what works” • Plans to administration when formative or summative assessments are being given - administration to support • Non-proficient MCA students will be identified on critical outcome assessment scores. (assumption: building success on regular assessments will support MCA success)

  12. Summary of the logic model… 3. Excel Training: • Training for department representatives (pivot tables) • Templates built and supported for identified formative and summative assessments early in the fall

  13. Draft checklist for box #6 on the logic model For each common assessment identified: • 1. REVIEW HISTORIC DATA on each common assessment that you’ll collect data on for 08-09 • 2. FORMATIVE ASSESSMENTS • Plan formative assessment and common strategies you’ll use to prepare students for the targeted summative assessment • Design and revise a template for formative assessments as a communication and alignment tool • Review data and student work from formative assessment (results - bottom 2 groups from MCA’s as well as proficient and GT) • Set plans for DI based on results of the formative assessment • 3. SUMMATIVE ASSESSMENTS • Plan summative assessment and common strategies you’ll use to prepare students • Design and revise a template for summative assessments as a communication and alignment tool • Review data and student work from summative assessment (results - bottom 2 groups from MCA’s as well as proficient and GT) • 4. Entire department (and specialists) meet and discuss FINAL CONCLUSIONS and suggestions for next time the assessment is given. Focus on vertical articulation. This could happen during the following times: IDT, department meetings, faculty meetings, late starts/early release. • 5. SUPPORT or requests for support will be offered at each IDT meeting on the following: • Support on writing SMART goals • Designing high quality formative and summative assessments • How to use formative assessment data • Differentiation to improve student achievement • Support on using Excel to use data
