The ideal flower girl dress doesn’t always have to be used for the one occasion and has a life before, during, and after the wedding. Indeed, the flower girl dress can be worn again after the ceremony & reception. Typically, a customer will want to use the same outfit for her First Communion (if chosen in white or ivory) and even a Holiday concert. Sometimes people like to preserve flower girl dresses as a memento or to pass on to the future generation. Flower girl dresses, especially one made from Pegeen is made of pure silk which wears very well and can be pressed again and again. We even have dresses in our personal closet of Pegeen dresses that are over 25 years old and they still look just as fresh for the grandkids as they did on our nieces! (We used every niece for our photo shoots!). You just need to know a few simple facts in order to takeappropriate care of a flower girl dress.
If a flower girl dress becomes stained, the fabric will determine how to clean your dress. Dry cleaning is recommended for all Pegeen dresses of pure silk. There are some companies that make their dresses from rayon and acetate which also should be dry cleaned. Gowns of taffeta, poly-shantung, (read the contents) satin, poly silk or cotton with smocking can go through the gentle cycle or “hand-wash” in cold water. These outfits must also “hang to dry” and not to be dried in a machine. You can choose to put them on the “air fluff” cycle in the dryer or choose to dry them in the dryer but only for 5-7 minutes to remove the wrinkles. Be careful however of all dresses OTHER than Pegeen or dresses made from silk because these can melt with an iron.
All dresses made from Pegeen can be ironed on HIGH avoiding the tulle or organza as they also will melt with high irons. We recommend ironing the latter two fabrics only on the lowest setting on your iron. However, all Pegeen dresses are made in silk and therefore the silk ONLY fabric can be ironed on high and boy, do they come out beautifully. We do not like steam for two reasons. First – it’s a pain they take forever and second, we honestly feel that steam (besides spitting dirt and debris spots) can bread down the fiber.
Moisture, light, mildew, dirt, dust, insects, heat and even mice can harm your flower girl dresses. During long-term storage, the textile’s sizing can also darken the fabric.
