ENERGY CONVERSIONS BOOK “M” CHAPTER 5 SECTION: 2
Energy conversion is a change from one form of energy into another. For example, when you use a hammer you transfer kinetic energy to the hammer, the hammer transfers it to the nail. When the hammer hits the nail, sound energy is produced.
From Kinetic to Potential and Back • When you are jumping on a trampoline, you are moving so you have kinetic energy. Each time you jump, you have gravitational potential energy because you have changed your position from the ground. Fig. 14 pg. 124 • Another example is a pendulum. Fig. 15 pg. 125
Conversions involving Chemical Energy • As your body digests food, chemical energy is released and is available to you. • Chemical energy of food is converted into kinetic energy when you are active, and thermal energy to maintain body temperature while you rest. • Fig. 18 pg. 126 shows how chemical energy in food is a result of the sun’s energy
Conversions involving Electrical Energy • You use electrical energy all the time. Electrical energy can be converted into other forms of energy. • For example when you use electrical energy to heat an iron, its electrical energy is converted into thermal energy. • Fig:18 Pg. 127
Energy and Machines • A machine can make work easier by changing the size or direction of the force required to do the work. • Fig. 19-20 pg. 128
Machines are Energy Converters • When machines transfer energy, energy conversions can often result. • For example, when you ride a bike it makes some noise because some of the kinetic energy is being transferred into sound energy. • Some machines are specifically designed to convert energy from one form to another like in Fig: 21 on pg. 129
Why Energy Conversions are Important: • Everything we do is related to energy conversions. Heating our homes, obtaining energy from a meal, growing plants, and many other activities.
Making Energy Useful • Machines help harness existing energy and can make that energy work for you. • It is a way of getting energy in the form that you need. • Fig: 22 pg. 130 Wind Turbine
Making Conversions Efficient: • Energy efficiency is a comparison of the amount of energy before a conversion with the amount of useful energy after a conversion. • Efficient car gets good gas mileage • Energy efficient homes are well insulated • Energy input is always greater than the energy output.
Energy Efficient • Making energy conversions more efficient is important because greater efficiency means less waste. • Pg. 146 Energy Efficient & Energy Friendly “The Green Movement” (means environmentally safe)
