  1. Past tense –ar verb conjugation First, lets review subjects/subject pronouns. Singular Plural 1st Person 2nd Person 3rd Person

  2. PRESENTtense –ar verb conjugation So far, we have learned the present tense verb conjugation of regular, irregular, and stem changing verbs. Below are the regular present tense –ar, -er, & -irverb endings.

  3. Before we learn the endings, lets get a grip of the present tense & past tense in English. Present tense is used to describe: Something that is happening now…………...I’m going to lunch. Something that is happening soon…………..I’m going to lunch in an hour. To express a general statement ……………School lunch is delicious! To describe a habit ………………………...I go to lunch every day. Past tense (also called preterite) is used to describe: Something that happened in the past (at a specific time or had a specific duration) I went to lunch yesterday. Last year, we ate lunch at school .

  4. Below are the past tense –ar verb conjugation endings. Bailar=to dance

  5. Now, think what each of these words means. Yeah, yeah, yeah. I know. The present tense and past tense nosotrosforms are the same. You will have to read in context or look for words of time such as yesterday, last year, last week, etc… Bailar=to dance I danced we danced you danced You all danced They/you danced He/she/you danced

  6. MEMORIZE the endings! Besides this PowerPoint, I don’t intend on giving further instruction on past tense verb conjugation to the class as a whole. The PowerPoint will be on my website indefinitely for you to access. It is your responsibility to learn/memorize the endings. However, if you need help with this concept, please contact me through my e-mail (Meredith.Schumacher@k12.sd.us) or phone (605-366-8366) or through the Remind app and I would be happy to help you on an individual basis.

  7. The next slide is homework/practice. You will be turning your answers in electronically. Follow these steps. Click here to be taken to my website’s contact form. Type your answers in to the “comment” area. If a word needs an accent for the yoor él, ella, Ud. conjugations, just type (accent on the o/e) after the answer. You should provide your e-mail address. If you do not have one, use mine: Meredith.Schumacher@k12.sd.us. If the above hyperlink doesn’t work, just go to sraschumacher.weebly.com & click the “Contact” page.

  8. Maria describes her family’s busy Saturday. Complete her description by writing the verbs in parentheses in the preterite tense. Number your paper 1-11 & write the correct past tense conjugation of the verbs in parenthesis. You do not need to translate this. Primero, Carlos y yo 1. ___________ (lavar) los platossucios. Después, yo2. ___________(limpiar) el baño. Entonces, mi padre 3. ___________ (cocinar) la cena y 4. ___________ (pasar) la aspiradoraen la sala. Mimadre y Carlos 5. ___________ (arreglar) el comedor y 6. ___________ (sacar) la basura. Carlos también 7. ___________(cortar) el césped. Mihermanita, Anita, 8. __________ (pasar) tiempo en sucuarto. Ella 9. ___________ (dibujan) y 10. _________ (mirar) television. ¡Quéperezosa! Y tú, ¿11. _______ (trabajar) mucho el sábado? Once you submit your answers, there are 3 more slides in the PowerPoint to complete, including an assignment.

  9. OF COURSE THERE ARE IRREGULARITIES! -CAR & -GAR VERBS • Verbs that end in the letters –car and –gar have a spelling change in the YO form in the preterite (past) tense. Here are some –car & -gar verbs we know. • Practicar • Tocar • Buscar • Pagar • Jugar • Llegar Knowing WHY these verbs have a spelling change will help you remember to change their spelling. The ‘yo’ conjugation in the past tense is an é. If you remember, when the letter ‘c’ is followed by an ‘e’ or an ‘i’, the sound changes to an ssssss sound instead of a k. This is incorrect! Practic é ar Practicé sounds like “practi—say” but should sound like “practi—kay”…. Which is why it should have the spelling chage of the c switching to a qu—but only in the yo form.

  10. Let’s look at a –gar verb… Jug ar é WRONG—BUT WHY? Jugé sounds like ---who—hey, we’ve lost the ‘g’ sound So, change the g to a gu, and now it is jugué, keeping the ‘g’ sound.

  11. If the ‘why’ doesn’t help, just remember this… Verbs that end in –car & --gar have a spelling change only in the yo conjugation in the past tense. -car verbs change the c to a qu Practiqué Toqué Busqué -gar verbs change the g to a gu Pagué Jugué Llegué

  12. ¡Vamos a practicar! You must reach 100% on the practice activity. When you reach 100%, please showthe substitute or Cassidy so they can mark off your name and give you credit for completing the assignment. Click here to be taken to the practice activity.
