Overview of Canadian Research Funding • Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada (SSHRC) • Funds research that build knowledge and expertise on social, cultural and economic issues • Foreign researchers can be funded as co-applicants within selected SSHRC programs or can be supported (travel and subsistence) as collaborators within any SSHRC programs • Canadian Studies Program in Australia and New Zealand • Funded by the Government of Canada • Aims to develop a greater knowledge and understanding of Canada, its values and its culture • Supports the Association and Centres for Canadian Studies • Offers research and teaching grants to academics, postgraduate travel awards and funds to assist visiting Canadian speakers
Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada (SSHRC) • Promotes and supports university-based research and training in the social sciences and humanities • Funds research that build knowledge and expertise on social, cultural and economic issues www.sshrc.ca
Definitions and Eligibility • Principal applicant: • Individual who has primary responsibility for the intellectual direction of the research and administrative responsibility for the grant • Must hold an academic appointment at a Canadian institution • Co-applicant(s): • Makes a significant contribution to the intellectual direction and conduct of the research • Foreign researchers are eligible to apply as co-applicants to selected SSHRC programs only • Collaborator(s): • Foreign researchers may apply as collaborators to any SSHRC programs • SSHRC does not fund the collaborator’s research expenses but does provide specific travel and subsistence costs
SSHRC Programs • Foreign researchers can only apply as collaborators: • Standard Research Grants • Foreign researchers can apply as co-applicants: • Major Collaborative Research Initiatives (MCRIs) • Community-University Research Alliances (CURA) • Strategic Knowledge Clusters • Image, Text, Sound and Technology (ITST) • Research Development Initiatives (RDIs) • Northern Research Development Program (RDI North) • International Opportunities Fund
SSHRC Standard Research Grants • Supports research and develops excellence in research activities in the social sciences and humanities • Supports individual or team research • Principal applicant and co-applicants must hold an academic appointment with a Canadian institution • Foreign researchers can only apply as collaborators with a Canada-based team • Awards are for up to 3 years • Up to C$100,000 per annum • Maximum C$250,000 over 3 years
Major Collaborative Research Initiatives (MCRI’s) • Leading edge collaborative research • Broad and critical issues of intellectual, social, economic and cultural significance • Fosters opportunities for collaboration on important international research, in which the Canadian team plays the lead role in the direction of the research • Encourages the involvement of foreign scholars as co-applicants • But must not exceed the number of Canadian participants • Foreign co-applicants may be brought to the Canadian research site as Visiting Scholars for a period of 3 months • Grants are awarded for 7 years with a minimum budget of C$100,000 per year
Community-University Research Alliances (CURA) • Supports the creation of alliances between community organizations and postsecondary institutions • Fosters research, training and the mobilization of knowledge in areas of importance for the social, cultural or economic development of Canadian communities • Development grants (successful “Letter of Intent”) • Up to C$20,000 • Limited to travel, workshops, meetings, secretarial support and communication and dissemination activities • Full grants (successful “Full application”) • Up to $200,000 annually for up to five years • Grant may be used to cover non-physical infrastructure costs for the support and coordination of the research teams and for carrying out some of the research activities • CURAs are also expected to seek funding from other sources
Strategic Knowledge Clusters • A strategic knowledge cluster is a national or international network of researchers in the social sciences and/or humanities that fosters collaboration or otherwise contributes to a particular issue, theme or content area • Supports networking, mobilizing knowledge, and facilitating the impact of research knowledge • Does not directly fund research • Clusters should include a sufficient number and range of participants to cover the perspectives and expertise required by the issue or topic • Clusters are encouraged to include foreign co-applicants and collaborators • Up to C$300,000 annually for up to 7 years (Max $2.1M)
Image, Text, Sound and Technology (ITST) • Supports new and creative applications of advanced technology in humanities and social sciences research • Assists researchers to learn and apply innovative digital multimedia technologies to their research on image, text and sound • Encourages proposals from multidisciplinary teams that offer a range of intellectual, technical and practical expertise • Foreign researchers are eligible to apply as co-applicants or collaborators • Partners and collaborators may be drawn from the private sector and public sectors as well as academia • Grants up to C$50,000 for 12 months
Research Development Initiatives (RDI’s) • Supports research in its initial stages, especially proposals which aim to: • Develop new research questions • Explore conceptual and methodological perspectives and directions • Critically analyze and assess research • Provides short-term support only • Enables grant holders to develop their research to a point where they are able to submit fully developed proposals to other programs • Foreign researchers are eligible to apply as co-applicants or collaborators • Awards are for 1 to 2 years • Maximum value is C$40,000 over 2 years • RDI grants are not renewable
Northern Research Development Program (RDI North) • Recognises the national significance and international strategic importance of Canada’s North • Supports the revitalization of existing research or development of new research • Aims to enhance capacity for Northern research and/or develop collaboration with Northern communities • Supports activities aimed at preparing full research proposals for funding under other programs • Funds direct costs of research or other research-related activities (e.g. conferences, workshops and networking activities) • Foreign researchers are eligible to apply as co-applicants or collaborators • Maximum value is C$40,000 over 2 years
SSHRC International Opportunities Fund • Assists Canadian researchers to initiate and develop international research collaborations TWO TYPES OF GRANTS • Development Grants: • To support developmental activities—such as workshops, seminars, and planning meetings—that are expected to lead to significant international collaboration • Value C$25,000 for one year • Project Grants • To help secure Canadian participation or leadership in current or planned international research initiatives or networks • Value C$75,000 for one year or exceptional projects may be considered for up to C$150,000 for two years

Eligibility for Canadian Studies Grants • Canadian Studies is research aimed at a better understanding of Canadian society and/or culture • Social Sciences and Humanities: Architecture, Arts, Business Studies, Communications, Policy, Education, Environment, Economics, Geography, History, Law, International Relations, Linguistics, Literature, Media Studies, Planning, Politics, Public Administration, Religion, Science Policy, Sociology, Social Administration • Purely scientific subjects and proposals that focus exclusively on technological or methodological issues are not eligible

Faculty Research Program (FRP) • To assist individual academics to undertake short-term research on Canada or aspects of Canada’s bilateral relations with Australia and NZ • Maximum value = C$5,800 • For airfare to and living expenses in Canada for maximum of 4 weeks • Number awarded annually varies (approx. 10) • Application deadline: July 31 (annually)
Faculty Enrichment Program (FEP) • To assist academics to develop and teach courses about Canada, including comparative courses where not less than 50% of teaching time is spent on Canadian material • Maximum value = C$5,800 • For airfare to and living expenses in Canada for a maximum of 4 weeks • Number awarded annually varies • Application deadline: July 31 (annually)
International Research Linkages (IRL) • To promote and facilitate international collaborative research between research teams from Canada and one or more countries where Canadian studies are represented • Will fund research seminars, workshops, or other forms of linkages • Maximum value = C$10,000 • Application Deadline: November 23 • Send application direct to ICCS Secretariat and copy to Canadian High Commission in Canberra www.iccs-ciec.ca
Canada-Asia-Pacific Award (CAPA) • Assists scholars in the Asia-Pacific • Research projects related to Canada and Asia-Pacific relations (bilateral or multilateral relations) • Individual or collaborative research • Funds direct costs related to the research project, which may include a research trip to Canada • Valued at C$5,000 – C$10,000 • Maximum of 2 awarded annually • Application Deadline: November 23 • Send application direct to ICCS Secretariat and copy to Canadian High Commission in Canberra www.iccs-ciec.ca
ICCS Summer Seminar Series • Open to academics and graduate students with a proven interest in Canadian Studies • Annual 5-day bilingual seminar combining oral presentations by academics or practitioners, discussion groups, and visits to major cultural and political sites in Ottawa • Limited to 20 participants worldwide • ICCS will double by a ratio of 2 to 1 a scholarship offered to participants by ACSANZ (max C$1,500) • Application deadline: April 15 (annually) www.iccs-ciec.ca
ACSANZ Postgraduate Travel Award • For postgraduate students to make a short-term research trip to Canada • Research must be relevant to the student’s thesis and in Canadian Studies • Applicants must be members of ACSANZ (Student membership = A$50 for 2 years. New members welcome!) • Maximum value = A$3,000 • for airfare to and travel and living expenses in Canada • Up to 5 awarded annually • Application deadline: September 30
ICCS Graduate Scholarship • To assist Masters and Doctoral candidates to undertake thesis-related research on Canada at a Canadian university for 4-6 weeks • Value = $C3,500 • 5 awarded annually worldwide, up to 2 awarded from Aus-NZ • Application deadline: November 15 NB: $1500 Institutional Support Award may be offered in conjunction with Graduate Student Scholarship by participating Canadian institutions
Canadian Studies Postdoctoral Fellowships • Teaching or research internships • May be located at any university with a Canadian Studies program (in Canada or abroad) • For possible locations see: www.iccs-ciec.ca/pages/otherlinks/centers/worldmap.html • Must have completed a PhD on a topic primarily related to Canada and not be employed in a full-time university teaching position • Value = C$2,500 per month + return airfare • Application deadline: November 15
Cultural Personalities Exchange Program (CPEP) • To assist prominent Canadian personalities in academic and cultural fields to obtain better exposure of their work and raise the profile of Canada abroad • Projects evaluated on quality and quantity of planned activities, audiences targeted and likelihood of fostering ongoing linkages • Minimum of 5 speaking engagements • Grant covers international airfare (economy only); host institution is responsible for visitor’s living expenses • Application must be submitted by the host institution through a faculty member who is a member of ACSANZ • Applications at any time to ACSANZ President
