HCI: JCU Workflow Re-Design 2010 SP2: CP3301/CP5607 Human Computer Interaction Angela McCarthy Glenn Molochino Laurence Tardiani
Team Members • Team Name: SIERRA • Team Members • Administration/Language Leader: Angela McCarthy • Creativity Leader: Glenn Molachino • Technical Leader: Laurence Tardiani
Overview • Application • Milestones • Design Evolution • Implemented Changes • Current Interface and Demonstration • Feedback • Future Development
Application • JCU Workflow • Available via StaffOnline under Workflow • Payroll and leave application system for James Cook University staff • Staff have to submit payroll claims every two weeks • Primary method of pay JCU Workflow Login Screen
Issues • Claim Confirmation • Search Field • Payroll Claim • Calendar • Drop Down Menus • Work Date • Select Job
Re-design Process • Identify users • Identify how current application works • Identify issues with current application • Propose a solution to address these issues • Create a paper-prototype • Create a low-fidelity prototype to test navigation • Create a high-fidelity prototype to test solution • Implement changes into final prototype
Milestones • Milestone 1: Project Overview • Milestone 2: Contextual Inquiry • Milestone 3: Storyboards, Low-fidelity Prototypes and User Testing • Milestone 4: High-fidelity Prototype and User Test
Contextual Inquiry • Acknowledge Usability Goals • Identified Issues • Job Types – Descriptions are ambiguous • Naming Conventions • Unorganised Design Structure • Redundantly Repetitive Input Fields • Implement a solution and begin re-design process • Prototyping • Paper Prototype • Low-Fidelity Prototype
Paper-Prototype • Sketches of design proposals • Testing basic navigation using flash cards • Navigational Tree Paper Prototype
Navigational Tree Workflow Navigational Structure
Low-Fidelity Prototype • Created in Flash • Interactive ‘flash card’ style • Navigation and interface alterations implemented • Demonstration: • http://am-jcu-repository.googlecode.com/files/workflowApp%20Prototype.swf
High-Fidelity Prototype • Implemented and hosted online • Added changes as required from low-fidelity prototype • Changes to High-Fidelity • User feedback suggestions • Date Selection: Originally drop down menu’s, now inline calendar selection • Hours Worked: Hour selections 1-5, changed to 1-12
Design Evolution • Interface designs originally ‘sketched up’ • Interfaces created in Photoshop • Interface designs then placed in interactive flash presentation • Application then moved to be hosted online • Changes implemented as required as per user tests
Implemented Changes Re-Designed Workflow Original Workflow Compare
Current Interface • Interactive Demonstration • http://auction.maths.jcu.edu.au/HCIapplication/
Feedback from Users • Surveyed a select group of users, male and female, users who frequently use the application, age range from 18-50 years of age • Average effectiveness rating of 1.57 • (On Scale of 1 – 5, 1 being highest, 5 being lowest) • Users approved of following: • Job Search • Aesthetics • No issues with errors • Feedback suggested that users assumed application was full/final version
Future Devlopment • Auto-filled Payroll Claim Forms • Staff will be able to save a default job type and simply select from a drop down menu pre-saved jobs • Minimises clicking and allows for faster submission of payroll claims • More Information on project can be found at http://code.google.com/p/honours-3d-paluma/wiki/CP5607HCI
Summary • Completed two prototyping phases • Met development specifications • Design Choices • User Requirements • Acknowledged User Feedback • Application open for continued future work
