Round Structure Beginning Strategies Novice DebateHenrichsen
Before Round • Preflow • Extra flow paper and pens • Disclosure of 1AC • Shake hands and smile
1AC • First and foremost get your entire case to fit in the 8 minute time frame. • Pre flow your 1AC so you don’t have to stress about it in round • Both you and your partner should know the 1AC by heart – practice it daily • Flow it • Read it • Speak it
1NC • ROADMAP!!! • The first neg speech usually takes on the on-case attacks and starts any T or DA’s that the neg will then build up in the 2NC • Have 2 generic arguments ready in your box that can be run with little to no adaptation against any aff(T/DA/CP) • Organized before you get to the podium • Have your partner feed you another T/DA if you have extra time
2AC • Take some prep if needed • Organize and group all the neg arguments • Mark dropped aff points • Roadmap!! • Line by line / Down the flow • Defense • Explain why the neg arg does not fit/link or the impact is outweighed by the aff • Stress Solvency • Offense • Extend all aff points • Add impacts to the case • Add an advantage to the case
2NC • Roadmap!! • Continuation of all key neg positions • If a certain arg has been killed by aff don’t push it further • Make sure the Solvency and Inherency of the aff have been attacked • You can do a new argument, but make sure all existing args are stable first. Or you will allow aff a weak arg to take out. • First half of neg block
1NR • Roadmap!! • Neg block part 2 • Different ground than what was covered by your partner • Extend all key neg positions • Not the best time for prep as it helps the aff more than you • Coalescing of voting issues – you know what the most important args are • Flow
1AR • Now is the best time for your prep – but if you are ready get up and go! • Organization and Speed are key here • ROADMAP!!!! • Make sure you cover EVERY part of the neg block you will not get a chance to add anything else after this five minute block • Group/Cross Apply as many arguments as you can • Look at the end of the flow to make sure you didn’t miss anything – line by line • Keep track of what you did in this speech • You will use it in practice and for reviews
2NR • Roadmap! • Clear concise and well delineated speech is key • Identify all the neg voting issues • Keep it down to 3 or 4 at the most even if you think all are nifty – some of us are more equal than others • Stress the impact calculus of any DA or solvency attacks • Slow it down and tell the story you know needs to be said • Flow it all
2AR • Roadmap • Voters • Time to slow it down and identify why this round belongs to the affirmative • Key voting issues • Advantages of the aff • Line by line and keep up the flow • Story telling
Prep • Each side gets five minutes at 99% of tournaments • Don’t use it before a CX • Best Aff times for prep are before the 1AR and the 2AC • Best Neg times are before the 1NC and the 2NR • Use it well
1A by the 2N Clarification of any points your partner needs Look for holes in the plan/solvency Explanation of plan/case 1N by the 1A Clarify attacks and any impacts attached to them Check how the neg links them to your case/plan Work to identify what is important 2A by the 1N Check for understanding of the rebuild of the aff case Look for further links to DA/T already in play 2N by the 2A Clarify all arguments you need to make sure are on the flow Check for any holes that you can have your partner exploit Cross-Ex
CX – Cont’ • Answer the question you are asked in a timely manner • Don’t blather / waste words • If you don’t know/understand say so • Ask real questions • Don’t waste the judges/opponents/your time with q’s that don’t help the round or try to make your opponent look stupid • Direct the Q/A to the judge not your opponents • If your opponent is getting flustered try asking the question in a different way • If your opponent starts being a jerk get POLITE
After the Round • Shake hands • Thank the judge • Clean up the room • No whining/gloating • Smile
