Advanced Search Advanced Search: Use this option for creating custom searches with a variety of search fields from which to choose.
Advanced Search This search will look for records that contain the terms “brain” or “cancer” in any field, records with a deadline on or after 9/1/08, and for which research conducted in the District of Columbia is eligible.
Advanced Search You can also limit your search results by using the Exclusion Fields. You can filter out information in which you are not interested. You can add subtract search fields necessary to your search.
Advanced Search Choosing the “explode” option will include all terms in the hierarchy underneath your keyword. Click the hyperlinked keyword name of the keyword to add it to your search. Browse the COS Keyword hierarchy or search for a specific term
Advanced Search Tip: hold the `control’ (PC) or `open apple’ (Mac) key to select more than one item from a picklist. You can also choose which requirements you meet, your citizenship, and the type of funding for which you’re looking.
Advanced Search Note that you can switch back to “Classic View” at any time.
Simple Search The Simple Search interface is for basic searching. Entering free text in the text box will search all of the Funding Opportunities fields for your search criteria.
Search Wizard Search Wizard Use the Funding Opportunities Search Wizard for a step-by-step process to help you set up your funding search.
Search Wizard First, indicate which of the choices best describes you or your employer.
Search Wizard Next, specify the country or countries of which you are a citizen or permanent resident.
Search Wizard Note: As you fill in your search criteria, the Search Summary on the left side of the screen will show what you’ve chosen so far. It will also tell you how many opportunities your search currently returns. You may choose to see those results at any time. Now select which sponsor types interest you.

Records with Deadlines in the Next 6 Weeks You can view a current list of all COS Funding Opportunities with deadlines in the next six weeks.
View by Sponsor Search the Funding Opportunities database by sponsor.
View by Sponsor Search for a sponsor using the text box, or browse for one by clicking on a letter.
View by Sponsor This brings you to a list of all sponsors starting with ‘N’. Click a sponsor name to find all current opportunities from that sponsor, e.g., National 4-H Council.

Search Results This search returned 498 results. Click “Hide query” to hide your search criteria. Then show them again by clicking “Show Query.” This search returned 635 results.
Search Results By default, the results list is sorted by relevancy, but you can choose to sort by Grant Title, Sponsor, Deadline, or Amount. Click on the hyperlinked column headings to sort the list accordingly.
Search Results Faceted search results take the results set from your search and break it down into "facets" according to key categories. From your results list, you can see at a glance how many opportunities are for “Training or Scholarship or Fellowship.” You can then click on any of these "facets" to see opportunities with those criteria only.

Search Results Mouse-overs help you view more information about each record without having to click on each title. Grant Title, Sponsor, Deadline, and Amount all have mouse-overs.

Search Methods You can use the `Match Any Field’ or `Match All Fields’ options at the top of the Advanced Search screen. • `Match Any Field’ will act as an “OR” operator –e.g.: selecting “match all fields” and typing “brain” in the top field and “cancer” right beneath it, will find records containing the words “brain” and “cancer” somewhere in the field(s) you are searching • `Match All Fields’ will act as an “AND” operator – e.g.: selecting “match any field” and typing “brain” in the top field and “cancer” right beneath it, will find records containing the words “brain” or the word “cancer” somewhere in the field(s) you are searching
More Search Methods • Within the rows are “or” operators that function within the broader “match all” or “match any” options. • You can add any number of exclusion fields. Instead of using the “NOT” operator, you can choose specific fields where you don’t want a term to appear.
Search Language – Other Tricks You can use these special characters to connect your search terms for specific results: • Wild Card *– find variations on a word – e.g., ENVIROMENT* finds profiles with words such as ENVIRONMENTAL and ENVIRONMENTS. • Proximity w/# – find words used together but not necessarily in an exact phrase – e.g., WIND w/2 ENERGY finds profiles where these two words are separated by not more than two words, such as those with the phrase WINDTURBINE ENERGY.
Search Language – Other Tricks • Exact Phrase “ ” – find a precise phrase – e.g., WIND ENERGY in quotation marks finds profiles where these two words appear together as a phrase. • Precedence( ) – execute a series of search commands in a particular order – e.g., (HIV OR AIDS) NOT EDUCATION finds profiles with the terms HIV and/or AIDS, then excludes those with the word EDUCATION.
Record Share You can e-mail any record to colleagues, even if they don’t have access to COS Funding Opportunities.
Record Share Fill out the form, listing up to 5 recipient e-mail addresses, then send.
Shared Record Your colleague will receive an e-mail with a link to the funding opportunity. That link is good for 14 days.
Citation Manager To download and save your results, click ‘Download Citations’ to see a window allowing you to do so.

Citation Manager Results This is the download of the full records in HTML format. Go to ‘File’ then ‘Save as’ to save it to open and read later offline.
Refine your Query Start with a broad search, then narrow it by searching within your results. This example shows a search with 1217 initial results.
Refine your Query You will be taken back to the main search form that will show you your previous choices. Add “genetic*” to your original search of “brain” or “cancer” to search within the initial 1217 results.

Save a Search The Save Search option will allow you to save searches that you have created to your COS Workbench.
Save a Search If not logged in, you will be prompted to enter your username and password.
Save a Search You will then be asked to choose a name for your search. If you are at an institution that subscribes to COS Funding Alert you will also be asked if you would like to receive e-mail about this alert.
Share a Search You can also “Share” your search with other COS subscribers.
