First Corinthians • Author: Paul (it says so) • Date: 57 AD • Place: from Ephesus • Occasion: (1) Deal with problems in church; (2) Answer questions from church. • Theme: 1 Corinthians 1:10 • Oddity: 1 Corinthians 5:9 • This is at least Paul’s second letter to Corinth • 1st Corinthians is 2nd Corinthians? • 2 Corinthians 7:8

First Corinthians • 1 Corinthians 5:9 and Inspiration • Not all biblical writers’ works were preserved • Not all inspired works were preserved • These facts DO NOT mean we have lostbooks or hidden books of the Bible • These facts DO NOT mean that we DO NOT have “all the Bible” • These facts DO NOT weaken the nature of INSPIRATION

First CorinthiansIntroduction of Letter (1:1-9) • “call upon the name of the Lord” • Acts 2:21 • Acts 9:14 • Acts 9:21 • Romans 10:12 • Romans 10:13 • 2 Timothy 2:22 • 1 Peter 1:17 Only those who are already in Christ can “call on the Lord”. It is not a way of salvation but a fact of already being saved.

First Corinthians Introduction of Letter (1:1-9) • 1 Corinthians 1:4-9 • Unity is the problem in Corinth • Disunity leads to: • false authority • false knowledge • false doctrine • false religion • Paul says, ‘You are all one because you are all in Christ and no one is better than anyone else because you all have the same opportunity to know and serve Jesus Christ’.

First Corinthians Unsolicited Answers From Paul (1:10-6:20) • 1 Corinthians 1:10 • Paul’s appeal is based on a singular bond in Christ • All Christians should speak the same thing and • Be united in mind and thought • Be united in mind and judgment • Means: In how you think and what you think • Yes, specifically Corinth has a “I follow” problem but what does that really mean? • They are teaching or those who “follow” them perceive: a difference in doctrine.

First Corinthians Unsolicited Answers From Paul (1:10-6:20) • 1 Corinthians 1:31 • Wisdom does not come from this world • We came from this world • Our only hope is to find the wisdom of God • “Let him who boasts boast in the Lord.” • Only God’s wisdom is worth knowing • Only God’s wisdom is worth talking about • Only God gets the glory • I can only mirror God when it comes to wisdom

Keeps Us Spiritually Immature But

First Corinthians Unsolicited Answers From Paul (1:10-6:20) • 1 Corinthians 4 {is about biblical authority} • 1 Corinthians 5 {obvious stuff} • 1 Corinthians 6 {airing & being dirty laundry} • Suing a brother ~ Is it ever right? • It is about spiritual maturity • It is about displaying sin & loving the world • Sexual Immorality • Begins with food sacrificed to idols • Ends with sacrificing self to the idol

  12. First Corinthians Solicited Questions from Corinth (7:1-16:4) • 1 Corinthians 7 {Marriage} • Marriage is about sex- period. • Vs 6- the “concession” is being married. It is best to remain single. • Unmarried and widows • stay that way- you can serve God better • but if you can’t stop lusting then get married • Married • “(not I, but the Lord)” because of Matthew 19:6

First Corinthians Solicited Questions from Corinth (7:1-16:4) • 1 Corinthians 7 {married} • “(I, not the Lord)” • simply means that Paul is not quoting Jesus • does not mean it isn’t BIBLE (scripture) • does not mean we have the option to take it or leave it • Vs’ 12-14 • simply a declaration about the legality of their marriage • Vs’ 15-16 • Is not justification for divorce • Has the hope of bringing the leaving spouse to Christ • But you do not have to live with (him or her)

First Corinthians Solicited Questions from Corinth (7:1-16:4) • 1 Corinthians 7:25-38 • Under the circumstances of that day ~ don’t marry • Paul speaks as inspired writer- all 1 Cor. is inspired! • Persecution is coming- yes but. • This is also a command for all time. (But, name something listed that is not true today.) • 1 Corinthians 7:39-40 {This is a difficult passage} • “only in the Lord” “must belong to the Lord” • Christian widow must marry only a Christian. • Christian widow marry only after prayerful consideration.

First Corinthians Solicited Questions from Corinth (7:1-16:4) • 1 Corinthians 8 {Food sacrificed to idols} • Food sacrificed to Idols is an attitude thing. • “knowing” is power and most power is abused • “thinking” you know something is human wisdom • Idols are nothing so their sacrifices are nothing • their food doesn’t honor or dishonor • but be careful with this ‘knowledge’ • you can cause a brother to sin by • thinking you sin openly • thinking that there MAY be something to idols

First Corinthians Solicited Questions from Corinth (7:1-16:4) • 1 Corinthians 9/10 {What right do you have?} • A couple of marks of an apostle [1-2] • The right to ‘only’ apostle [3-12] • We don’t use all of our apostle ‘rights’ [12-18] • Teaches about rights in general [19-23] • Teaches about self discipline [24-27]

First Corinthians Solicited Questions from Corinth (7:1-16:4) • 1 Corinthians 10 {What rights do we have?} • God’s people history of self-righteousness [1-13] • This section is an intro to “what rights do we have” • Idolatry as a gateway sin. • self indulgence • pagan indulgences • Finally, there is the personal… • “Everything…Everything…” certainly talking about the non moral things. • Don’t ask – Don’t tell when it comes to these matters. • Don’t be a stumbling block.

First Corinthians Solicited Questions from Corinth (7:1-16:4) • 1 Corinthians 11 {Christian Worship: Lord’s Supper} • Division causes division • Worship becomes divided at the Supper • The only good division is that of those doing right • Vs 30 “weak” & “sickly” have a physical and spiritual part. “Fallen asleep” means dead- again physical and spiritual. • Vs 34 is teaching against turning the Lord’s Supper into a meal and not about eating in the church’s building.

First Corinthians Solicited Questions from Corinth (7:1-16:4) • 1 Corinthians 12 {Christian Worship: Miraculous Gifts} • God the Spirit is real ~ He is God [1-3] • No matter the gift/service/works same God • All are “manifestation” of God the Spirit • Message of wisdom ~ understanding practiced • Message of knowledge ~ facts • faith ~ not saving but courage & strength & power • healing ~ healing • miraculous powers ~ catch-all for all miracles • prophecy ~ fore telling and forth telling • discerning spirits ~ false teachers & teaching • speaking in tongues ~ various languages spoken • interpreting tongues ~ translation of languages • All under the control of God the Spirit

First Corinthians Solicited Questions from Corinth (7:1-16:4) • 1 Corinthians 12 {Christian Worship: the body} • Human body and the spiritual body of Christ • Don’t all have the same strengths • Cannot function completely without each other • Must honor everyone as part (if they function) • Hierarchy of leadership • Note that the miraculous is not 1st, 2nd, or 3rd . • Note that not everyone in Corinth congregation had miraculous spiritual gifts.

First Corinthians Solicited Questions from Corinth (7:1-16:4) • 1 Corinthians 13 {Christian Worship: Love} • Love is the greater gift/necessity for all Christians • Vs’ 8-10 • Miraculous is “in part” by nature and by scope • “perfection” is the completed Word of God • When it is complete these miraculous will cease • Vs’12-13 • see poorly because the inspired word is not complete • face to face because then we can ‘know’ God completely • know in part because miraculous teaching is limited in scope (not in content) • know fully because we can have the mind of Christ and know the will of God from His complete inspired Word • 1 Corinthians 2:16 • Romans 12:1-2

First Corinthians Solicited Questions from Corinth (7:1-16:4) • 1 Corinthians 14 {Christian Worship: Tongues} • Tongues have always been a means of edifying the speaker [2, 4] • Apostles on Pentecost [Acts 2]; Cornelius [Acts 10]; Ephesians [Acts 19] • In Worship we want to edify God [3, 4, 22, 24-25] • Tongues are useless without a message [6-10] • Worship is a corporate act from man to God • Corinth had brethren faking speaking in tongues in order to promote themselves [9-12, 20] • Worship is to be orderly • Women are to remain silent as to hierarchy

First Corinthians Solicited Questions from Corinth (7:1-16:4) • 1 Corinthians 15 {Resurrection of the Dead} • The GOSPEL answers all your questions on resurrection!! • Study verse 28 on your own • “baptized for the dead” • a practice of baptizing living persons for the dead • If the church in Corinth was baptizing living brethren to save dead non-Christians would this be all Paul said about it? • submitting to baptism looking toward our death • Paul uses himself as an example: why go through this –baptism into Christ –if there is no resurrection?

First Corinthians Solicited Questions from Corinth (7:1-16:4) • 1 Corinthians 15 {Resurrection of the Dead II} • What kind of body Paul? • There are all kinds of “bodies” • It will be a spiritual body • “bear the likeness of the heavenly one” • Jesus Christ had a physical body • We will have a “body” as fitting heaven • Does not teach a body as Jesus’ resurrected body • Does not teach that God has a “body” at all

First Corinthians Solicited Questions from Corinth (7:1-16:4) • 1 Corinthians 16 {The Special Collection} • Paul says, ‘do it with the general collection based on income’. • Is 1 Corinthians 16:2 our command to give in Worship? • Yes- because it implies a collection is already being taken. • No- because it is about a special collection for the poor saints in Jerusalem.

First Corinthians Closing the Letter (16:5-18) • 1 Corinthians 16 {Closing Remarks} • Paul lets them know that he has to wait to come to them [5-9] • It was for unity sake that he went to Macedonia first. • 2 Corinthians 1:23 • He asks that they treat Timothy in a godly way [10-11] • They must have asked for Apollos but he was not yet willing to return [12] • He gives those in Corinth examples to follow as leaders [13-18].

First Corinthians Conclusion (16:19-24) • 1 Corinthians 16 {Concluding remarks} • Asia is that region around Ephesus • Aquila and Priscilla are still in Ephesus • Paul signed the letter personally • The ending is not negative it is a Christian salutation. But it is a warning to those causing division in Corinth. • Paul loves them all in the Lord.
