Learner Led Business A different way forward at CWA
The Soap Factory- ourstarting point • Introduced as a student led business: students designed, made, wrapped and marketed their own soaps. • Extensive equipment with realistic work based activities. • Health and Safety was embedded • Profits were reinvested into the activity but these were small • Various groups used the factory-Soap Stars
Where we went next and why • It was not always plain sailing • Reap the benefits and learn the lessons! • Time to move onto other student led enterprises, these were smaller, leaner, more agile and less complicated to manage.
Where did we go from there? Student led business and enterprise spread throughout the department, which now offers an enterprise qualification
Next steps… • Introduce enterprise as part of the new ‘Study Programmes’ • Build the ‘Bridge to Employment’ • Use student led business as a realistic alternative to work experience for an ‘even more supported’ approach to work skills than work experience • Progression to real work based programmes such as at CRC • Progression to Project Search • ‘Spend A Little Shop’ • ‘Soap Stars’ will be back!
