FUNCTIONS AND PARTS OF A MOTHERBOARD BY: PAMELA D. DUMANDAN 11-RAZER
What is Motherboard? Motherboard is one of the most essential parts of a computers system. It holds together many of the crucial components of a computer including the CPU memory and connectors for input and output devices.
Parts of the Motherboard Input/Output CPU Socket Several Connectors Power Connector Slots ROMChips Northbridge Slots for Sys. Main Memory
CPU Socket The actual CPU is directly soldered onto the socket. Since high speed CPUs generate a lot of heat, there are heat sinks and mounting points for fans right next to the CPU.
Power Connector To distribute power to the CPU (Central Processing Unit) and other components.
Slots For the system main memory, typically in the form of DRAM (Dynamic Random Access Memory) chips.
Northbridge A chip forms an interface between the CPU, the main memory and other components. This referred to as Northbridge, this chip contains large heat sinks.
Input/output A second chip controls the (I/O) functions. It’s not directly connected to the CPU but to the northbridge. This I/O controller is referred to as the Southbridge.
Several Connectors Provide the physical interface between I/O devices and the motherboard. The Southbridge handles these connections.
ROM Chip A chip which contains the firmware or start-up instructions for the computer system. This is called the BIOS.
Slots for Sys. Main Memory For one or more Hard Disk to store files. Common types of connections, IDE and SATA.
