  2. Why ProQuest? Many NPS researchers like ProQuest because it contains a large number of articles in full-text on a very broad array of subjects. It includes newspapers, Trade journals (including Military publications), popular magazines and Scholarly publications. Some like it because it offers suggestions for useful terminology, and its interface seems to be one many people find simple to use. This presentation will demonstrate how to find, read and save articles in full-text, using ProQuest.

  3. Start at the library’s web site http://www.nps.edu/Library

  4. ProQuest is a “database”* the library subscribes to Click Search Databases *Libraries use the word “database” to mean an index to the literature of various fields. Many databases, such as ProQuest, provide article content, as well as indexing

  5. Click ProQuest

  6. ProQuest is set to open at the “Advanced Search” page You can change the languages displayed by the ProQuest interface* *ProQuest also offers automated translation for selected articles

  7. Enter your terms. Phrases of more than two words need double quotes to act as a phrase* “directed energy weapon” Note that the default is to search the entirety of ProQuest *two word phrases don’t require quotes

  8. Note the number of “hits” Refine Search lets you go back and fine-tune your search for better results Not all will supply full-text, but ProQuest is able to offer quite a few of its articles with a single click

  9. Take a look at the Suggested Topics. This can be helpful if a topic or its terminology is new to you Click a topic to generate a new search

  10. A note about sources… Of 745 documents, only a few were published in “Scholarly Journals” “Trade Publications” can include Military Journals of interest

  11. Viewing articles in ProQuest All articles offer an “abstract”, or summary Some articles offer plain text, text+Graphics or a pdf version of the article What about the rest?

  12. This button can help: Click “ Get It!” to find out about access to this article from another Dudley Knox Library resource, or even to have it sent electronically from another library

  13. You can mark the documents you want to read or use later Marked items can be emailed or exported to citation management software like RefWorks. You will be prompted to login to your account
