  2. Why should we care how our handouts look? • When handouts look better, they work better. • Students understand them more easily and learn more effectively.

  3. How do you feel when you see this handout?

  4. First… • Consider your goals and choose your focus. • Plan your handout so the reader can catch the purpose and main point immediately. • Use the following basic design principles…

  5. a sans serif font. a dingbat font. a serif font. a decorative font. What feeling does each font give you?

  6. Most PowerPoint slides do not make good handouts. It’s better to design the handout separately.

  7. When you’re finished… • Step back and take a broad view. Squint while holding the handout at arm’s length to get a better idea of the overall design. • Don’t let a bad copying job ruin your beautiful handout. Know your copy machine!
