Fresh RI Money & the Market Breakdown
Fresh Bucks • Fresh Bucks (FB) are 3 different types of coins used at the Farmers market when customers don’t have cash • The large gold coins are FB5; the small gold are FB1, the small silver are BB • You are responsible for processing cards and recording all necessary information. • Counting out the appropriate coins • Coins do not expire; gold can buy anything at market • Save all receipts and checks in cash box envelope
FB5 • Fresh Bucks 5 are $5 coins given customers using checks, credit/ debit • Inform the customer of the $1 fee tacked onto their initial amount for debit/ credit transaction • Must be in increments of $5 • So, if someone wants $20 charged t their debit card their total charged is $21 • You don’t need to record anything but do save all receipts; save checks • Any money not spent at a stand will be provided in cash by farmer
FB1 & BB • FB1 are worth $1 and are given to EBT/SNAP customers • For every $5 of FB1 bought by EBT, they get $2 of Bonus Bucks (BB) free • These BB can be used to buy fruits and vegetables ONLY; that is the incentive • No change given for FB1 or BB at stands
A Typical EBT transaction • A customer will come up to your table and ask to get money using their card • If it is an EBT customer you press “enter” on the swiping machine until the “foodstamp” option comes up; it will be preceded by “credit” then “debit” • When you’ve selected “foodstamp” then press “enter” • Swipe their card and hold onto it until the transaction has gone through
Continued • Enter the amount of money they want; be mindful of entering the numbers in the appropriate decimal places, press “enter” • Have them enter their PIN, press “enter” • In the blue binder, write down the last 5 digit of their EBT number, located on front of card. Write down amount of FB1 given, BB given, and total FB, while machine processes
Continued • Receipts will automatically print. Keep that first copy: MERCHANT COPY. Put that copy in envelope in cash box • Ask the customer if they would like a receipt. If yes, press “enter” again and it will print. If no, do nothing • Count out the amount of Gold FB1 they get and consult cash box if necessary to figure out BB earned. Count out the correct amount of silver BB. Return card to customer along with their coins
FIN • Congrats! You just successfully processed an EBT card • The process if very similar for debit/ credit cards • If you have an questions at all, ask the market manager with you. Mistakes are best caught early on!
