  2. Where is Rome located? • Near the center of the Italian peninsula • Separated from the rest of Europe by a high mountain range called the Alps

  3. What are the major land features? • Tiber river – provided water and transportation routes • Apennines – mountain range that stretches more than 850 miles • Surrounded by the Mediterranean Sea, Tyrrhenian Sea, and Ionian Sea, Adriatic Sea

  4. What is the climate in Rome? • Mediterranean climate – mild winters and warm, dry summers

  5. How did Rome’s Geography help it grow? • Less rugged mountains which allowed Rome to unite • Rome had several large plains making farming easier • Natural harbors that helped support trade
