The Use of MCT’s in the Fire Service Joshua Gromer CIS105 Honors Project
What is an MCT? A Mobile Computer Terminal (MCT) is a fully functional computer that is mounted in the cab of a fire truck and contains its own central processing unit. It has the ability to analyze and store information locally, as well as share information with other MCT’s.
Uses of the MCTDispatch • Information given to the dispatcher from the caller is relayed through the MCT (including the emergency, the location, and other additional info) • Status of unit (On Scene, Responding, Available, etc.) • Times of dispatch and response times are tracked and used for record keeping purposes
Radio Channel Time Dispatched Address of Call Map Page Type of Call Units Dispatched A call dispatched on the MCT
Uses of the MCTGPS/ Mapping • Mapping to calls • Address given by dispatch and the MCT can map the unit to the address • Fire hydrant locations • Fire hydrants are tracked through GPS so the unit can use the one closest one • Unit location • Vehicle tracking through GPS is tied in with the CAD (Computer Aided Dispatch) system so the closest available unit is dispatched • Nearest hospital and trauma center locations
Uses of the MCTRecord Keeping • Call/dispatch logs • Organizes call history • Keeps track of the types of calls and where they are • Vehicle maintenance logs • Maintenance of the vehicle • Gas and mileage logged • Roster • Serves as time clock as well as accountability for who is on what unit
Uses of the MCTPre-Incident Planning • Known hazards can be tracked in the MCT • Used in management situations • Helps protects personnel from known dangers • Premise alerts • Alerts emergency response crews of known situations attached to the address • Ex.- A critically ill child who requires frequent emergency care
Positives and Negativesof MCT’s • Technology allows for more effective communication • Organized system • Electronic mapping means quicker response times • Technology is not always reliable • People become dependent, and when the system fails, response times can be very long Positives Negatives
