Analysis of MmLE Molly Pidgeon
Summary • I really enjoyed using this MmLE, BrainPOP ELA. When I first went onto the BrainPOP site I chose the BrainPOP Jr. as I wanted to work with k-3 material. I clicked on ELA then the category of nouns. I really liked this particular category because it has a five minute interactive video that not only explains what a noun is, but then goes through the different types of nouns. It uses a lot of real life examples that helps to generalize the term “noun”. The student can then relate nouns to their personal lives. Along with the video there is a activity, a easy/hard quiz, students are able to write about it, draw and read more about it. There is also a game, and a word wall about nouns. • URL http://www.brainpopjr.com/readingandwriting/word/nouns/ • Correlates to Common Core State Standard: CCSS.ELA-Literacy.L.1.1b Use common, proper, and possessive nouns. • http://www.corestandards.org/ELA-Literacy/L/1
Proof of Correlation to CCSS If you look at these snapshots you can see that throughout the video students will learn about common nouns and proper nouns. Students are able to see the label of what the noun is in the picture. CCSS.ELA-Literacy.L.1.1b Use common, proper, and possessive nouns
Ideas from Moreno & Mayer • This BrainPOP video about nouns is a fantastic example of a way to incorporate interactive learning to students. The pretraining principle is great when using this source in the classroom. The pretraining principle states that students learn better from interactive multimodal learning environments when they receive pretraining that activates or provides relevant prior knowledge. The theoretical rationale is that pretraining helps students engage in generative processing by showing them which pieces of prior knowledge they should integrate with incoming information” (Moreno & Mayer, 2007, p 320).” This source is an example of pretraining because the students have been exposed to the concept of nouns, but now with BrainPOP the student is able to watch a review video that is interactive and “fun”. This video catches the eye of students and they are more likely to retain the information this way. They are hearing the information and seeing it. They can then complete activities based off what they learned from the video. This video makes nouns easier to understand because the students can relate it to their daily lives.
