81% of the land area of North Karelia is covered by forests. • Both xeric (dry) heath forests (~ “pine forests”) and mesic heath forests (mainly dominated by Norway spruce) make about 40% of the forest cover, and the rest of it, about 20%, belong to either herb-rich heath forests or herb-rich forests. • The main forest tree species is Scots pine, accounting over half of the volume of the growing stock. • Moose and arctic hare are the most important game species.
