  1. Artificial Lift Automation What is available? What is needed? How do we get there? Cleon Dunham Artificial Lift Research and Development Council (ALRDC)

  2. Why the Questions? What is being developed? • Several incremental artificial lift automation developments by Service Companies to support their products • Not enough integration across artificial lift technologies • Not enough input from Operating Companies • No industry-wide coordination Who can lead this? • Operating Companies? • Service/Supply Companies? • Universities? • Consultants? • Others? Who can coordinate? Where do ideas come from? Who can provide training?

  3. Beam Pumping Current capabilities: • Monitoring • Alarming, reporting, plotting • Control – manual settings* • Diagnosis – manual* • Calibration – manual* • Design – manual* • Optimization – manual* • Historical – limited* * Some human intervention required Needed capabilities: • Monitoring – advanced • Alarming – advanced • Control – automatic settings • Diagnosis – automatic • Calibration – automatic • Design – automatic • Optimization – automatic • Proposals – automatic • Integration with historical • Knowledge sharing

  4. Electrical Submersible Pumping Current capabilities: • Monitoring • Alarming, reporting, plotting • Control – limited • Control – manual settings* • Diagnosis – manual* • Calibration – manual* • Design – manual* • Optimization – manual* • Historical – limited* * Some human intervention required Needed capabilities: • Monitoring – advanced • Alarming – advanced • Control – expanded usage • Control – automatic settings • Diagnosis – automatic • Calibration – automatic • Design – automatic • Optimization – automatic • Proposals – automatic • Integration with historical • Knowledge sharing

  5. Gas-Lift Current capabilities: • Monitoring • Alarming, reporting, plotting • Control – injection set point • Allocation – system balance • Diagnosis – manual* • Design – manual* • Optimization – limited • Historical – limited* * Some human intervention required Needed capabilities: • Monitoring – advanced • Alarming – advanced • Control – automatic settings • Diagnosis – automatic • Calibration – automatic • Design – automatic • Optimization – automatic • Optimization – expand scope • Proposals – automatic • Integration with historical • Knowledge sharing

  6. How Do We Get There? Options: • Develop by Service Co’s • Develop by Operating Co’s • Develop by Universities • ALRDC or others coordinate effort • Role of SPE • Artificial Lift TIG’s • Workshops • Forums • Other • Other options? How to Get Started: • Leave it to individual companies or organizations • Hold a “design seminar” • Build a consortium • Other ideas? Pros and Cons • Competition • Cost • Capabilities • Timing

  8. Interested in Discussing This? Let’s Get Together • Let me know and I’ll be happy to meet any time during the Forum to discuss what is needed in more detail • Let’s also discuss other forms of artificial lift and production automation topics and what is needed for them • I’m also happy to discuss this any other time, on the phone or by e-mail Cleon Dunham • cleon@oilfieldautomation.com • Founder, Artificial Lift Research and Development Council • ALRDC is an international, non-profit, tax exempt 501(c)6 organization
